URBANA, Ohio - - Six UVa-Wise players scored in double figures as the Cavaliers claimed their largest margin of victory ever over a NCAA Division II opponent with a 100-51 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory over Urbana University at the Grimes Center Thursday. The victory was the fourth in a row for Jamie Cluesman's team who scored 100 points for the first time this season.
UVa-Wise (13-12, 11-8 MEC) ambushed the hosts with a 30-to-5 scoring spurt to take a 49-24 lead with 2:53 to play in the first half.
Urbana (3-20, 3-16) never recovered as the Blue Knights have now lost four of their last five games.
Urbana held a 15-12 advantage at the midway point of the first quarter after a conventional 3-point play by Megan Beachy. Things quickly turned south, the Blue Knights would make just 3-of-17 field goals in the second quarter after connecting on 6-of-13 attempts in the first 10 minutes of play.
For the game, UVa-Wise limited Urbana to just 27.9 percent shooting, including a 16.7 percent shooting performance from the 3-point line.
While the Cavs defense was in full force, the team's offense was sharing ball at its best rate of the year. UVa-Wise assisted on 22 field goals, "Quick" Gomez led the way with eight assists while Ada Stanley matched a career-high with four assists.
Hanna Oliver, Cynita Webb and Stanley tallied 14 points each to lead the season-high scoring outburst while Kalee Johnson and Dakotah Turner netted 13 points. Ashley Cullen was the sixth Cav to reach double figures with 10 points.
Johnson added a career-high three steals to her stat line as the redshirt sophomore has now scored in double figures for three consecutive games.
The Cavs dominated the battle of the boards by outrebounding the Blue Knights 49-27. In total, five UVa-Wise players had at least five rebounds, led by Webb and Cullen who grabbed eight each.
Cluesman's team finished the game shooting 59.7 percent, the number eclipses the previous season-high of 56.3 percent at Bluefield State on Dec. 19.
Urbana was led by Nikki Current and Weston Minnich who posted 11 points each in defeat.
Next up, the Cavs will try to win their fifth consecutive game when the team visits Notre Dame College Saturday. Tip-off from South Euclid, Ohio is set for 2 p.m.
