Webb's 15th Double-Double of the Season Powers Cavs by Rams

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Cynita Webb recorded her 15th double-double of the season as the junior's game-high 24 points and game-high 15 rebounds helped UVa-Wise overpower Shepherd University 75-66 at the Butcher Center Saturday. The win was the third consecutive Mountain East Conference victory for the Cavaliers who remain in a tie for fifth place in the league standings.

An early timeout by UVa-Wise (12-12, 10-8 MEC) Head Coach Jamie Cluesman changed the course of the game. With her team down 7-0, the first-year coach called timeout to reset. From there, the visitors would finish the half on a 32-17 scoring run to take a 32-24 lead to intermission.

Webb and a high energy defense by the Cavaliers spurred the turnaround. Webb tallied 10 points and eight rebounds in the opening 20 minutes while Shepherd (11-13, 8-10 MEC) made just 36.7 percent of its shots in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Senior guard Janice Ladson harassed Ram ball handlers for 94 feet while sophomore Ada Stanley and freshman Mackenzie King each drew charges. In total, Shepherd turned the ball over eight times in the first half despite UVa-Wise not recording a steal.

The run proved to be too much to overcome for Jenna Eckleberry's squad who dropped its fourth consecutive game.

The hosts played the Cavs even in the third quarter to enter the fourth period trailing 52-44.

The Rams would cut the lead to six on five different occasions over the final 10 minutes but would be unable to get any closer as the visitors had an answer each time.

Cluesman's club made 11-of-12 free throws down the stretch while finishing the game 24-for-29 from the charity stripe.

The strong foul shooting allowed UVa-Wise to make (24) more free throws than Shepherd attempted (14). The Cavs also enjoyed a wide advantage on the glass as UVa-Wise won the battle of the boards 47-30. Overall, Shepherd finished with fewer total rebounds (30) than defensive rebounds (32) for UVa-Wise.

The 3-point shot also played a role in the triumph as five different Cavs made a shot from beyond the arc. For the game, UVa-Wise shot 7-of-17 from distance; Shepherd made just three 3-pointers on 13 attempts.

Three Rams fouled in the game, including Marley McLaughlin who had a team-best 14 points. Two other Rams finished with four fouls as the interior play of UVa-Wise proved troublesome.

After sitting for the majority of the first half due to foul trouble, redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson netted 13 second half points. Hanna Oliver made a pair of 3-pointers and finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the line to join Johnson and Webb in double figure scoring with 14 points.

Karli Lankford was the only other Shepherd player to finish in double figures as she matched McLaughlin's 14 points while dishing out seven assists.

Oliver added five assists to her 14 points for team-high honors as UVa-Wise assisted on 10-of-22 made field goals in the contest.

Next up, the Cavs will try to win their fourth consecutive game when they visit Urbana University Thrusday in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
