Third Quarter Woes See Cavalier Women Fall at Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. - - Host Catawba remained undefeated as the Indians overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to claim a 101-86 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over UVA Wise at Goodman Gym Saturday.

Catawba (7-0, 3-0 SAC) outscored the visitors 46-to-17 in the third quarter to take a 78-61 lead to the fourth quarter.

UVA Wise (5-3, 1-2 SAC) made just 3-of-11 field goal attempts in the third quarter while the Indians seemingly could not miss. The hosts connected on 15-of-21 field goal attempts and 12-of-14 free throw attempts in the decisive quarter.

Taisha DeShazo scored 18 of her game-high 42 points in the period as the guard connected on a trio of 3-pointers in the stretch.

The Cavaliers built a 12 point halftime lead behind the playoff Kalee Johnson and Caitlyn Ross. Johnson scored 14 of her 21 points in the half while Ross netted 10 of her season-high 25 points in the opening 20 minutes.

Shemya Stanbeck (14) and Sara McIntosh (13) were other Indians who cracked double figures as 11 Catawba players dented the scoring column.

The loss was the second straight for UVA Wise in league play.

The Cavs will be back in action Saturday at home against Newberry College in another SAC tilt.
