Cavalier Women Lead Wire-to-Wire, Defeat Newberry

WISE - - Freshman Caitlyn Ross tied a season-high with 25 points while senior Cynita Webb notched her sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead UVA Wise to a 79-75 South Atlantic Conference women's basketball victory over Newberry at the Prior Center Saturday.

UVA Wise (6-3, 2-2 SAC) led wire-to-wire but had to fend off a furious comeback bid to even its league record.

Newberry (5-5, 2-3 SAC) trailed by 12 at 72-60 with 2:41 to play when Ross was whistled for her fifth foul.

From there, the Wolves' full court press began to pay dividends as the Cavaliers would commit three turnovers down the stretch.

Newberry would get the game within four points with 12 seconds to play on a bucket from Kelsey Brett. Brett would be fouled on the play but would be unable to convert the 3-point play. A scramble for the rebound would then follow before the Wolves missed three shots in the final seconds providing the final margin of 79-75.

UVA Wise built its lead early behind the strong play of Ross. The point guard scored or assisted on 6-of-9 made field goals by the Cavs in the opening quarter as she netted eight points and dished out two assists in aiding her club to a 20-13 lead after a period of play.

Redshirt junior Kalee Johnson was also pivotal in the early part of the game as she tallied eight of her 14 points in the first quarter.

Webb began to assert her will on the interior in the game's second quarter. The Virginia Beach, Va. product played just six minutes in the period but netted six points, grabbed a pair of rebounds and handed out an assist as her team entered intermission with a 36-27 lead.

The third quarter featured two made 3-pointers by sophomore Mackenzie King, seven points from Ross and six from Webb as the Cavs pushed the lead to 55-41 heading to the final stanza.

Prior to Ross fouling out in the fourth quarter, UVA Wise led by as many as 16 points on two different occasions. Junior Hanna Oliver drilled a 3-pointer with 7:24 to play to extend the lead to 60-44 for the hosts.

The Cavs closed the game by making 7-of-8 shots from the floor to finish the contest shooting 45.3 percent. Ross made 10-of-14 field goal attempts, including a 3-of-4 showing from beyond the arc. The guard also tied her season-high with seven rebounds while adding three assists, a block and five steals.

Brett led Newberry with 20 points while Mylaysia Gates posted 19 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Overall, the Wolves received 37 bench points as Talia Roberts chipped in 14 points in a reserve role.

Next up, UVA Wise visits Tusculum Wednesday for a SAC contest. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
