WISE - - UVA Wise forced 29 turnovers as freshman Caitlyn Ross claimed a NCAA Division II era school record nine steals as Jamie Cluesman's team upended Bluefield State 70-49 in non-conference women's basketball play at the Prior Center Wednesday.
Bluefield State (4-4) trailed by just three at 47-44 with 6:11 to play after a layup by Alexus Tucker. From there, the hosts kicked up the intensity. Â
UVA Wise (5-2) would put together a 12-0 scoring spurt behind a trio of 3-pointers. Junior Hanna Oliver made a pair of shots from distance while sophomore Mackenzie King also canned a triple in the sequence.
The scoring run would put the game out of reach. After the Blues made two foul shots, the Cavaliers went on a second extended scoring spurt.
Cluesman's squad would close the game on an 11-3 run to claim the 70-49 win.
Bluefield State made just 3-of-12 field goal attempts in the fourth quarter while committing nine turnovers. Oliver netted eight of her team-high 14 points in the quarter while Ross posted seven of her 12 points during the stretch.
The Cavs led 35-19 at intermission but, the Blues got back in the game with a 21-point third quarter to cut the deficit to four.
Ross collected six of her nine steals in the opening half helping lead her to team to 36 points off of turnovers. The nine steals by Ross are the third most of any player in NCAA Division II this season.
Senior Cynita Webb posted yet another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds to record the 31st double-double of her career. Ada Stanley came off the bench to toss in 10 points to round out the quartet of Cavs in double-figure scoring.
Bluefield State was led by Kylah Webb's 12 points. The Blues were limited to just 31.5 percent shooting for the game.
Next up, UVA Wise visits Catawba Saturday at 7 p.m. in a South Atlantic Conference battle.
