Volleyball Falls in Four Set Battle at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – UVa-Wise volleyball fell in a tough four-set match against Coker University as the Cobras outlasted the Cavs in a 3-1 (23-25, 36-34, 25-19, 26-24) victory Saturday afternoon.

UVa-Wise (1-24, 0-20 SAC) took an early 13-9 lead on a Coker (7-18, 4-16 SAC) attack error in the first set as the Cobras called a timeout. A series of errors for the Cavs tied the set at 13 apiece but UVa-Wise regained the lead later in the set for a 20-17 advantage as the Cobras took another timeout. Coker came from behind to knot the set once more, 23-23, but the Cavs would win the final two points to take the first set, 25-23.

A trio of kills to start the second set put UVa-Wise ahead early but Coker managed to tie the set at 9-9. A quick run for the Cavs put the team ahead 14-12 later in the set. Coker looked to take the second set but redshirt senior Ciara Kain's kill pulled the Cavs within two points, 24-22. The two teams went back and for the remainder of the second frame with 11 ties until Coker took the set, 36-34, to knot the match at 1-1.

Coker jumped out to a 10-6 advantage to start the third set. A kill by sophomore Kelsey Green and a service ace courtesy of senior Morgan Milligan put UVa-Wise down by just four points, 14-10. A 6-1 run for the Cobras gave the team a 20-11 lead later in the set but the Cavs answered with a five-point run to get within four points once more, 20-16. Coker held onto the lead and went on to take the set 25-19 to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Cobras had another fast start to open the fourth set, but UVa-Wise rallied from behind to knot the set on a kill by sophomore Matelyn Gibson, 6-6. The Cavs gained a 16-14 advantage on back-to-back Coker attack errors as the Cobras called a timeout. A kill by Kain later in the set gave the Cavs a 20-19 lead with junior Madelyn Lawrence's kill tying the fourth frame, 24-24, late, but back-to-back kills for Coker gave them a 26-24 fourth set win as the Cobras took the match, 3-1.

Gibson led the Cavs with 13 kills and added six digs and three service aces. Kain and Green each recorded double-doubles with Kain registering 12 kills and 11 digs while Green posted 11 kills and 12 digs. Senior Morgan Milligan also recorded a double-double dishing out 39 assists alongside 14 digs. Fellow senior Briana Kerr finished with a team-high 25 digs in the loss.

Head coach Kristen Salyer's team will return to action next weekend with a 7 p.m. match against Newberry Friday night with Senior Day scheduled for Saturday's 2 p.m. match against Anderson.
