Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Darrell-Dingus Ely

Johnson's Career Day Propels Cavs to Wire-to-Wire Triumph

GAFFNEY, S.C. - - Redshirt junior Kalee Johnson scored a career-high 18 points, Cynita Webb recorded her second double-double in as many days and UVa-Wise forced 28 Converse turnovers as Jamie Cluesman's squad scored an 87-53 non-conference NCAA Division II women's basketball victory Saturday.

UVa-Wise (1-1) led wire-to-wire in the win as Johnson scored six of her 18 points as part of a 17-2 scoring spurt to start the game. The fast start propelled the Cavs to a 20-8 lead after the first quarter and a 40-17 lead at halftime.

Converse (1-1) never recovered. The Valkyries would be unable to get the game back with in single digits at any point in the game as the team finished with more turnovers (28) than made field goals (23).

The strong defensive effort by UVa-Wise was not limited to forcing turnovers. Converse made just 34.3 percent of its shot attempts for the game while being out rebounded 41-37.

Webb was seemingly unstoppable inside. The senior finished 9-for-13 from the floor to net 19 points while hauling in 13 rebounds in 24 minutes of work. The double-double was the 28th of her career and capped a two-day stretch that saw her average 19.5 points and 13 rebounds per game to start the season.

In total, five Cavs scored 10 or more points. Freshman Nia Vanzant came off the bench to score a season-best 14 points. The guard canned a pair of 3-pointers and committed just one turnover in the contest. Hanna Oliver and Mackenzie King made two 3-pointers each to finish with 11 points and 10 points respectively.

As a team, UVa-Wise shot 50.7 percent from the field, including a 54.5 percent showing in the second half. Fifty of the team's 87 points came in the paint while 28 came off of Valkyries turnovers.

Johnson added six rebounds, three assists and four steals to her ledger. The four steals were also a career-high. Freshmen Caitlyn Ross and Leah Kestner also boasted impressive stat lines. Ross scored seven points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out seven assists. Ketner was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field to finish with eight points in 11 minutes of action.

Nigeria Davis scored a team-high 17 points while Alexis McMillian was a rebound shy of a double-double as she added 10 points in defeat.

Next up, the Cavs travel to Concord University Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip.
