ATHENS, W.Va. - - The mentee beat the mentor Thursday night as Concord Hall of Famer Jamie Cluesman took her UVa-Wise women's basketball team to the Carter Center and left with an 87-81 victory. The win was the first for Cluesman over her college coach Kenny Osborne and allowed the Cavaliers to halt a four-game losing streak to the Mountain Lions.
The lead swapped hands 12 times with seven lead changes with the final lead change coming with 6:40 to play when UVa-Wise (2-1) redshirt junior Kalee Johnson scored to make it a 69-67 contest with 6:40 to play.
Concord (2-2) would never again have the game tied or have the lead. The Mountain Lions trailed by five with 2:25 to play when junior Hanna Oliver canned one of her game-high four 3-pointers. Following turnovers by each team, Concord's Maggie Guynn cut the lead back to one possession on a layup with 1:21 to play.
From there, Cluesman called timeout to set up a play. On what proved to be the decisive bucket of the game, Johnson found her way just inside the free throw line for a basket to push the lead back to five.
Concord answered with a pair of foul shots and after getting a stop on the defensive end, the Mountain Lions had the ball down three with under 40 seconds to play.
Concord would go inside to 6-foot-4 forward Riley Fitzwater only to see Ada Stanley stand in and take a charge, turning the ball back over to UVa-Wise.
Leading 82-79, the Cavs would make 5-of-6 foul shots down the stretch to preserve the win.
UVa-Wise basically played a six-player rotation in the win. Ross, Oliver and Johnson all played 40 minutes while senior Cynita Webb played 39 minutes.
The group of four supplied the bulk of the offense. Oliver finished one point off her career-high with 20 points as she made 7-of-12 attempts from the field and 4-of-7 attempts from beyond the arc. Ross stuff the stat sheet as she registered season highs in points (18), rebounds (7) and assists (7) while committing just one turnover. Johnson and Webb tossed in 17 points each.
The Cavs shot 55.7 percent from the floor in the game, including an 11-for-17 showing in the fourth quarter. A big improvement was seen in turnovers as well, UVa-Wise turned it over just 11 times after averaging 21 turnovers in the first two games.
Concord was led by Madison May who scored a game-high 25 points while handing out eight assists. Guynn and Fitzwater netted 18 points each with Fitzwater grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds in the loss.
The Mountain Lions held a 43-38 lead at intermission behind seven first half 3-pointers. In the second half, Concord made just 3-of-9 shots from distance. Osborne's team entered the year ranked in the preseason D2SIDA Atlantic Region Poll and is coming off a program-best 23 wins a year ago but has dropped two of its first four games to open the season.
The game was the last of a season-opening three-game trip away from the Prior Center for UVa-Wise. The team plays its home opener Monday at 5:30 when Lees-McRae visits Wise.
