Cynita Webb Nets Career-High 26 Points in Home Opening Victory

WISE - - Cynita Webb lead UVa-Wise with a career-high 26 points, while grabbing 17 boards en route to an 82-74 non-conference women's basketball victory over Lees McRae College inside the Prior Center Monday.

With 2:17 left in the game, Lees McRae's (3-3) Jessica Henderson hit a 3-pointer to cut UVa-Wise's (3-1) lead to two at 74-72. From there, Kalee Johnson would score five straight to give the Cavaliers an insurmountable lead.

Webb and Hanna Oliver would then seal the deal by sinking three free throws in the closing seconds to give Jamie Cluesman's squad a win in the home opener.

The two teams swapped the lead 16 times with six ties with all ties and lead changes occurring in the first 20 minutes.

UVa-Wise took the lead for good on one of Oliver's two made 3-pointers when she gave the team a 35-33 lead with 2:33 left in the first half. The final minutes of the first half were bizarre. Following Oliver's triple, the Bobcats' Tiana Shuff drained a pair of foul shots to cut the lead to one. Mackenzie King then pushed the lead back to three at 37-35 and then things got strange.

Lees-McRae's Karli Mason missed a 3-pointer at the end of a shot clock. The buzzer sounded as the ball hit the rim with just five seconds remaining on the game clock. The buzzer seemed to confuse everyone on the floor as the game was halted after a disagreement on who had possession and the Bobcats received the ball on a controversial decision.

Lees-McRae would throw the ball out of bounds on the ensuing inbounds pass giving possession back to UVa-Wise.

The play seemed to energize the Cavs as Webb converted a conventional 3-point play at the buzzer to send UVa-Wise into intermission with a 39-37 lead.

The Bobcats would be within single digits for the remainder of the game, but would be unable to take the lead as the Cavs won their third straight contest.

Webb had one of the better shooting games of her career. The forward made 7-of-10 field goals, while making a career-high 12 free throws on 15 attempts. The 5-foot-11 senior collected 13 of her season-high 17 rebounds in the first half. Eleven of Webb's 17 rebounds came on the offensive end.

The double-double was the third of the season for Webb and the 29th of her career.

For the fourth consecutive game, Kalee Johnson tallied 10 or more points as the redshirt junior netted 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Junior Ada Stanley also had a big night, as she scored 16 points off the bench.

The Cavs controlled the battle of the boards as they out-rebounded the Bobcats 43-to-30. Johnson finished a rebound shy of a double-double as five UVa-Wise players had at least three rebounds.

Caitlyn Ross led the Cavs with a game and season-high 12 assists. The freshman has dished out at least five assists in each of the first four games of her collegiate career.

In the loss, Destiny Johnson collected a team-high 22 points, while Henderson tossed in 17.

Next up, Cluesman's team will open up South Atlantic Conference play at home on Tuesday, Nov. 26th at 5:30 p.m. against Mars Hill University.
