About UVa-Wise
- Coach Salyer's team will look to pick up their first conference win on the road this weekend with Newberry up first before taking on Anderson Saturday. The Cavs are coming off of back-to-back sweeps this past weekend against Catawba and Queens before falling in a five-set battle to non-conference foe Concord University Tuesday evening.
- Redshirt senior Ciara Kain continues to be a force on offense with 106 kills this season, posting a season-high 24 kills against Concord Tuesday night. Kain adds 126 digs and seven blocks to her stat line this campaign.
- Freshman Meagan Blagg had a stand-out performance against the Mountain Lions Tuesday as she recorded a season-high 14 kills for the Cavs. Fellow freshman Zoe Avery also had a big night with a season-high 62 assists in the match.
- Senior Morgan Milligan continues to lead her team in digs with 193 to date this season while fellow senior Briana Kerr has notched 126 digs so far this year.
- Junior Brooke Abbott's .277 attack percentage is a team-high while also leading her squad with 26 total blocks, four solo and 22 assisted.
- UVa-Wise will come back to Wise next weekend for matches against No. 24 ranked Wingate University Friday night and Coker University Saturday afternoon.
Notes on Newberry College
- Newberry enters into Friday night's match with a 3-8 overall mark, 1-6 in the league, following a 3-0 loss on the road at Lenoir-Rhyne last weekend. Head Coach Ross Kessler's squad is 1-2 at home so far this season.
- The Wolves are led in kills by senior outside hitter Toni-Anne Whitlow who has recorded 96 this year. Junior Zoe Dinkins follows with 87 kills for Newberry in the campaign. Dinkins also holds a team-high 32 total blocks with six solo and 26 assisted.
- Freshman Avery Webb and junior Taylor Garrison lead their team in assists with Webb notching 173 and Garrison posting 171. Freshman Katie Ullsperger's 122 digs sit atop the category for the Wolves with freshman Morgan Walter not far behind at 105 digs this season.
- Newberry will stay at home for a match against Tusculum Saturday afternoon before heading on the road next weekend for contests at Queens (N.C.) and Catawba.
Notes on Anderson University (S.C.)
- Head Coach Todd Hay's team will host UVa-Wise Saturday afternoon with Tusculum on the schedule for the Trojans Friday night.
- Anderson is currently on a seven-match win streak with their most recent loss at Wingate University. The Trojans have dropped only one other match in their season opener against Indianapolis and hold a 9-2 overall mark, 6-1 in the SAC.
- Outside hitter Maya Learmonth leads the Trojans with 110 kills this season, followed close behind by junior right side Regan Duty who has 89 kills so far. Four Trojans are currently hitting .200 or better led by sophomore Noelle Knutsen who is recording a team-best .276 attack percentage.
- Senior setter Emily Conlin has registered a team-high 459 assists this campaign, averaging 10.93 assists per set, while adding 122 digs. Freshman Lindsay McCurley and sophomore Meghan DeVaux lead their team in digs, each posting 137 this year.
- The Trojans are 2-1 at home this season and will be on the road next weekend at Catawba Friday and Queens (N.C.) Saturday afternoon.
History
- This is the first volleyball match between UVa-Wise and Newberry College since 2016 when the Wolves defeated the Cavs, 3-0.
