BRISTOL, Tenn. – Women's tennis was tripped against Lees-McRae College Sunday afternoon in a 4-3 loss to the Bobcats. The Cavs claimed one victory in doubles play and picked up a trio of wins in singles play in the loss.
UVa-Wise (4-3) sophomore duo Liza Akimenko and Katya Akimenko swept Lees-McRae's (2-2) Sandy Allen and Mei Hiramatsu at No. 1 doubles, 6-0. Senior Aya Melhem and sophomore Grace Hall fell at No. 2, 6-3, while freshman Megan Harwood and sophomore Lillian Morris dropped their match at No. 3, 6-2.
In singles play, Liza Akimenko gained another win at No. 1, 6-2, 6-1, over Allen. Katya Akimenko added another victory for the Cavs with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Hiramatsu at No. 2. Melhem fell in a battle at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, 6-4, while Hall dropped her match at No. 4, 6-1, 6-0. Harwood put up a fight at No. 5, but was outlasted by the Bobcats' Jaden Acklin, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Olivia Dishner earned the final singles win of the day for UVa-Wise at No. 6 as she topped her opponent, 6-2, 6-1.
Head coach Danny Rowland's team will return to action in February to commence the spring championship season.
