HICKORY, N.C. – UVa-Wise volleyball suffered a 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-18) loss to Lenoir-Rhyne University Friday night.
The Cavs (1-18, 0-15 SAC) trailed to open the match as Lenoir-Rhyne took an 18-13 lead into a UVa-Wise timeout. The Bears (14-8, 9-5 SAC) used a 7-0 run to close out the first set with a 25-14 win.
Another fast start for the Bears pulled Lenoir-Rhyne in front, 6-1. The Cavs struggled to get in rhythm as they fell behind 15-5 to Lenoir-Rhyne later in the set. Three-straight points for the Cavs cut the Bears lead to single-digits, but Lenoir-Rhyne managed to extend their lead once more as they took set two, 25-11.
The two teams battled in the third set tying the match several times before the Bears gained a two-point advantage, 16-14, as the Cavs called a timeout. Lenoir-Rhyne continued to hold onto the lead, up 21-16 as UVa-Wise took another timeout. The Bears went on to take the final set, 25-18, to earn a 3-0 victory over the Cavs.
Sophomores Kelsey Green and Matelyn Gibson led the Cavs with six kills apiece. Freshman Zoe Avery recorded her second career double-double with a match-high 18 assists alongside 14 digs. Senior Morgan Milligan added 11 digs in the loss.
Head coach Kristen Salyer's squad will return to action tomorrow with a 2 p.m. match at Mars Hill.
