Cavs Battle Back, Fall Short at Concord

ATHENS, W.Va. - - Concord University closed Saturday's game on an 11-to-4 scoring spurt to claim a 73-67 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory over UVa-Wise at the Carter Center. The late game run, thwarted a Cavalier comeback that saw the guests overcome a 13-point fourth quarter lead only to fall short.

Concord (14-3, 10-2) used its defense and clutch foul shooting down the stretch to claim its ninth consecutive victory. The Mountain Lions held the Cavaliers (8-10, 6-6) to just 2-of-10 shooting over the final three minutes of play. At the line, Concord would go a perfect 6-for-6 in the final minutes to seal the victory.

The hosts led for the majority of the contest behind the play of forward Riley Fitzwater and guard Andreanna Pool. Fitzwater finished the game 8-for-9 from the floor en route to a game-high 19 points; the sophomore added 13 rebounds to post a double-double. Pool canned 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc while going a perfect 4-for-4 at the charity stripe to tally 17 points.

While the late game defensive effort pushed the Mountain Lions across the finish line, it was the team's defense that allowed the 13 point lead to come to fruition.

UVa-Wise made just 10-of-35 field goal attempts in the first half as coach Jamie Cluesman's team fell behind 31-24 at intermission.

The Cavs got back in the game thanks to strong play from redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson and junior Cynita Webb. Johnson scored 13 of her career-high 17 points in the second half; the Elizabethton, Tenn. native finished 7-of-13 from the floor while making 3-of-6 3-point attempts. On the interior, Webb posted her 10th double-double of the year as she poured in 15 points and tied Fitzwater for game-high rebounding honors with 13.

UVa-Wise took its first lead of the game since the fourth quarter when Webb scored inside off a Janice Ladson pass with 3:32 to play to give her club a 63-62 lead. The bucket capped a 14-0 scoring run that featured baskets by Hanna Oliver, Mackenzie King, Ladson and Webb. Webb scored seven of her team-high 15 points during the stretch.

Concord enjoyed a healthy advantage at the foul line. The Mountain Lions made 20-of-29 attempts; in comparison, the Cavs made 4-of-6 attempts.

After the slow start, UVa-Wise rebounded to make 18-of-32 field goal attempts in the second half, including five made 3-pointers. The Cavs won the battle of the boards 47-to-42 and claimed 22 offensive rebounds in defeat.

The game wrapped up a four-game road trip for UVa-Wise, the Cavs went 2-2 over the stretch. Next up, Cluesman's squad will battle West Virginia Wesleyan in the Prior Center Wednesday in a 5:30 p.m. tip.
