Ladson Nets Career-High 15 as Second Half Surge Propels Cavalier Women

WISE - - Janice Ladson scored a career-high 15 points as UVa-Wise outscored visiting West Virginia Wesleyan by 17 points in the second half to claim a season-series sweep of the Bobcats with a 73-54 triumph at the Prior Center Wednesday.

UVa-Wise (9-10, 7-6 MEC) led by just two, 33-31, at intermission before using its defense to take command of the game in the third quarter.

In the decisive period, West Virginia Wesleyan (4-12, 4-9 MEC) made just 3-of-13 field goal attempts while turning the ball over five times in a 10 minute session that saw the Cavaliers shoot 50 percent from the field and make 8-of-9 free throws.

Redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson scored five of her nine points in the quarter while sophomore Nokomis Williams scored four points and grabbed six boards in the quarter. The five turnovers by the Bobcats led to eight points for the Cavs who tallied 14 points off turnovers in the win.

Jamie Cluesman's team started the second half with a flurry as an an 8-0 scoring run pushed the lead to double digits for the first time. During the stretch, junior Cynita Webb scored four of her 12 points while Williams and Johnson also scored in the paint.

Wesleyan would get to within six with 2:49 to play in the quarter only to see UVa-Wise respond with a 7-0 run that featured a conventional 3-point play from Johnson, a bucket by freshman Makenzie King and a pair of free throws by Willilams.

Williams' two foul shots were part of a 20-for-23 shooting effort for the Cavs at the stripe, the strong showing allowed the hosts to finish +14 from the line for the contest.

Overall, UVa-Wise outpaced Wesleyan 18-to-10 in the third quarter.

The Bobcats would get within eight once more with 6:47 to play in the fourth period when Tyra Hughes scored a fast break bucket. It would be the final time Wesleyan would be within single digits as sophomore Ada Stanley scored inside before Ladson scored four quick points to make the lead 64-50 with 5:49 to play.

It effectively ended the contest as UVa-Wise improved to 6-0 all-time inside the Prior Center against Wesleyan and 11-1 overall.

After being out rebounded in the first half, the Cavs bounced back to win the battle of the boards 47-to-40. Webb finished with a game-high 14 rebounds to record her 11th double-double of the season and her third in a row.

Stanley netted 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting while Hanna Oliver recorded eight points and added two steals. Williams' final stat line read four points, six rebounds, two assists and three blocks for the six-foot forward.

Abi Gabauer and Victoria Jackson each came off the bench to score 10 points each to lead the Bobcats. Wesleyan finished the game shooting 30.4 percent, the number was impacted greatly by a 9-for-34 showing in the final 20 minutes.

Next up, UVa-Wise will travel to Glenville State for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday.
