INSTITUTE, W.Va. - - Cynita Webb recorded her ninth double-double of the season as her 20-point, 14-rebound performance led UVa-Wise to a 71-59 Mountain East Conference win over West Virginia State at the Walker Convocation Center Wednesday.
With the win, UVa-Wise (8-9, 6-5 MEC) has won back-to-back games for the first time this season. More importantly, the team has now won consecutive road MEC games for the first time since 2014.
Jamie Cluesman's team put forth its best defensive half of the season to jump out to a 32-18 lead at intermission. West Virginia State (4-13, 3-8 MEC) was limited to 5-for-33 shooting in the opening 20 minutes as the deficit proved to be insurmountable.
The Yellow Jackets climbed to within five at 49-44 after three periods of play before the visitors would put the game away down the closing stretch.
With her team's lead cut to three at 51-48 Webb would make two free throws to start an 8-1 run for the Cavaliers to push the lead to 10 with 3:24 to play.
Sophomore guard Hanna Oliver would deliver the knockout blow as she canned a pair of 3-pointers in the final three minutes of play to seal the deal. The Woodbridge, Va. product finished the night with 14 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
UVa-Wise saw two players post a new career-high rebounding total as sophomore Ada Stanley and senior Ashley Cullen grabbed 10 each. Stanley finished two points shy of the first double-double of her collegiate career.
Redshirt sophomore Kalee Johnson finished with 11 points to reach double figures for the second consecutive contest to round out a trio of double-figure scorers for the Cavs.
For the game, West Virginia State shot 27 percent and finished with more made free throws (18) than made field goals (17). Anesha Harmon came off the bench to score a team-high 17 points while Charity Shears added 10 points in a losing effort.
UVa-Wise started and finished the game fast, the Cavs shot 47.1 percent in the opening 10 minutes while making 7-of-13 field goals in the fourth quarter to shoot 53.8 percent in the final stanza. The team drew four offensive fouls in the game, Cullen took three of the four charges. Nokomis Williams tied a season-high with four blocks to lead a season-high eight block effort by UVa-Wise.
The win completes a season-series sweep for the Cavs; UVa-Wise knocked off West Virginia State 87-84 in Wise earlier this season.
Next up, Cluesman's crew will visit Concord for a 2 p.m. tip Saturday in a game that will pit two teams north of .500 in the league standings.
