WISE - - Ada Stanley scored nine of her career-high 26 points in the third quarter as UVa-Wise erased a 38-29 halftime deficit to post a 76-61 Mountain East Conference victory over Fairmont State at the Prior Center Thursday.
UVa-Wise (6-7, 4-3 MEC) went to a full court press in the third quarter and it immediately paid dividends. After falling behind 47-35 with 7:11 to play in the period, the Cavaliers erupted for a 14-2 scoring spurt to knot the game.
During the run, the duo of Stanley and Cynita Webb were unstoppable on the interior. The pair scored the first seven points during the stretch which included a conventional 3-point play from Webb before Ashley Cullen sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around a Stanley bucket to get the contest tied.
Brooke Kurucz made a jumper to push Fairmont State (5-8, 2-5 MEC) back out in front only to see Stanley respond with back-to-back baskets to give UVa-Wise its first lead of the night. It would be a lead the Cavs would not relinquish as the hosts would take a 58-55 lead to the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth quarter, Jamie Cluesman's squad continued to dominate the interior. Stanley and Webb would combine for 15 of their team's 18 points as UVa-Wise forced four Fairmont State turnovers and limited the visitors to 3-of-11 shooting in the period.
The Fighting Falcons built their nine point lead behind 3-point shooting and limiting turnovers. FSU made five 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and turned the ball over five times in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second half, the switch flipped as the visitors turned the ball over 10 times and while failing to make a shot from beyond the arc.
For the game, UVa-Wise outscored FSU 36-to-18 in the paint while scoring 23 points off turnovers. Fueled by Stanley's 26 points, the Cavs recorded 37 bench points. The 26 points were the most scored by any Cav this season and marked the second consecutive game a UVa-Wise player scored at least 25 points; Webb scored 25 points Monday at Lincoln Memorial.
Webb finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds, her 10 rebounds were a game-high and aided her club to a 41-27 advantage on the glass.
The Cavs made nine 3-pointers in the win, Hanna Oliver was a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc while Mackenzie King and Adalmaryz Rivera-Gomez each made two shots from distance.
Rachel Laskody and Sierra Kotchman scored 15 points each to lead the Fighting Falcons.
The win was the sixth of the season for UVa-Wise, the number matches the team's win total from last season.
Next up, the Cavs will play host to Shepherd University Saturday at 2 p.m.
