WISE - - Shepherd limited UVa-Wise to just four points in the fourth quarter as the Rams overcame a 49-44 deficit after three periods of play to post a 64-53 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory at the Prior Center Saturday.
UVa-Wise (6-8, 4-4) made just 1-of-9 field goal attempts in the final period while also turning the ball over eight times over the stretch to aid the comeback.
While the hosts were cold, Shepherd (6-8, 3-5 MEC) played its best quarter of basketball in the final quarter. The Rams made 6-of-7 field goal attempts, went 8-for-11 at the charity stripe and scored nine points off turnovers to collect the road triumph.
Marley McLaughlin scored 10 of her game-high 22 points in the period thanks to a perfect 4-for-4 showing from the field. Sydney Clayton also had a big final stanza as she tallied 12 points and six rebounds; the forward finished the game 15 points and 12 rebounds.
UVa-Wise was led by Kalee Johnson who scored 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting and Cynita Webb who posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Shepherd enjoyed a healthy advantage at the free throw line, making 20-of-35 attempts; UVa-Wise was 7-of-13 from the foul line.
Next up, the Cavaliers will begin a four-game road trip Thursday at West Liberty.
