Volleyball Earns 3-2 Win on the Road in Conference Opener

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - - Volleyball opened up conference play on the road with a 3-2 (28-26, 16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8) victory over Glenville State College Friday night.

The Cavaliers (3-9, 1-0 MEC) were led by sophomore Madelyn Lawrence who registered 21 kills and hit .385 in the win. Sophomore Brooke Abbott and freshman Kelsey Green added nine kills apiece. Sophomore setter Makayla Ledford posted 49 of the Cavs 53 assists while junior Morgan Milligan notched 23 digs in the win.

After trailing the Pioneers (4-5, 0-1 MEC) to start the match, UVa-Wise climbed back from a six-point deficit to get within one point, 23-22, later in the set. The two teams would trade leads late in the set, but a kill by freshman Matelyn Gibson followed by a Pioneer attack error would pull the Cavs ahead for a 28-26 set one win.

Glenville State jumped out to a 10-point 13-3 lead in the second set and did not let up as the Pioneers maintained a 10-point lead late in the set, going up 20-10. The Pioneers posted a .333 hitting percentage in set two as they claimed a 25-16 victory to tie the match, 1-1.

UVa-Wise turned things around heading into the third set as the Cavs pulled ahead 20-12 on a kill by Abbott. The Cavs continued to dominate in the set as they posted a 25-18 win to lead the Pioneers, 2-1.

Set four was a battle as the two teams tied the score a dozen times throughout the set. Lawrence would tie the set early for the Cavs, 11-11, as the Pioneers took a timeout. Another kill by Lawrence later in the set would give UVa-Wise a four-point lead, 21-17, as Glenville State called its second timeout. The Pioneers would tie the score late before earning back-to-back points for a 25-23 set four win to tie the match once again.

The Cavs controlled the fifth set as the team hit .429 with a 9-3 lead early. Glenville State would get within three points, but a 5-1 run would close out the set as UVa-Wise came out on top with a 15-8 victory in the fifth set and a 3-2 win in the team's league opener.

UVa-Wise tallied 55 kills, 53 assists, and 73 digs in the match as well as 11 blocks. Glenville State posted 61 kills and 61 assists with 86 digs in the loss.
