ATHENS, W.Va. - - The 2018 season ended in heartbreak for UVa-Wise as Concord won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the eighth inning of game two to win 8-7 and advance to next week's Mountain East Conference Tournament. The win came after UVa-Wise won the opener 6-2 and held one lead runs in the seventh and eighth inning.
UVa-Wise (19-27, 16-16 MEC) held a 7-6 lead going to the bottom of the eighth inning only to see defensive miscues cost the Cavaliers a shot at the tournament.
Concord (26-21, 17-15 MEC) gained life when Oscar Garcia reached base on an error with out in the inning. A hitter latter, Chad Frazier flew out to get the Cavaliers one out away from victory.
The Mountain Lions did not go down without a fight as Adrian Peralta lined a single through the left side and after an error in the field, Garcia scampered home to tie the game. Adam Linkous then lined a base hit up the middle to send the hosts to the postseason.
Stuart Paz led the Cavalier offense with three hits in his final collegiate game while Tyler Blaum also lined three hits as part of a 17-hit effort for UVa-Wise.
Hank Banner's team won the opener 6-2 behind a five inning relief effort from freshman RJ Vanvickle and a big offensive day from Dawson Cagle. Cagle went 1-for-2 with a two-run homer and two walks to force the do-or-die game in the regular season finale.
In addition to Paz, Zachary Blaeser, Timmy Meador, Matt Wright, Matthew Wilkinson and Joe Catalani played their final game in a UVa-Wise uniform.
