BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - Visiting UVa-Wise scored the first 10 goals of the game and never looked back in a 16-3 Mountain East Conference women's lacrosse victory over West Virginia Wesleyan Friday. It was the fifth consecutive win for Meghan Dennehy's squad who now stands one win away from a perfect regular season conference record in just the program's fourth year of existence.
UVa-Wise (11-4, 4-0 MEC) began the game with a flurry as junior Kristin Gobbi tallied three of her game-high five goals in the early onslaught. Teammate Rachel Cole also netted a hat trick in the win with three goals as the Cavaliers finished the contest with 24 shots on goal, including 17 in the first half.
West Virginia Wesleyan (6-7-1, 1-3 MEC) never found footing in the game as the Bobcats did not score until 5:13 to play in the opening half. It would be the hosts' final goal of the half as they entered halftime trailing 12-1.
The entirety of the second half was played with a running clock due to UVa-Wise holding at least a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Sophomore Jesse French led all players with six points in the win as she posted a game-high four assists while junior Sydney Steinberg handed out a pair of assists as part of a four-point day in the win.
Next up, UVa-Wise will visit Shepherd University Sunday in search of an undefeated MEC regular season. First draw from Shepherdstown is set for 12 p.m.
