SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Junior McKayla Grasham scored in overtime to give UVa-Wise its first women's lacrosse conference championship in school history as the Cavaliers knocked off Shepherd University 11-10 Sunday afternoon. Grasham's goals capped a three-goal second half comeback for the visitors that included a save on a free position shot by senior goalie Melanie Reilly in the final seconds of regulation.
With the win, Meghan Dennehy's club will host next week's conference tournament at Carl Smith Stadium. Game times and complete seeding will be announced later this evening.
UVa-Wise (12-4, 5-0 MEC) played most of the game without three-time all-conference performer Hannah Marshall. The senior was assessed her second yellow card of the game with 4:44 to play in the first half.
Shepherd (7-6, 3-2 MEC) quickly scored after Marshall's departure to take a 6-4 lead before also scoring the first goal of the second half to lead 7-4 with 21:16 remaining.
From there, the Cavaliers finished with a flurry as junior Kristin Gobbi scored three of her game-high four goals in the second half to help lead the come from behind victory.
Gobbi's final goal of the afternoon came with 12:45 to play, it gave the visitors a 9-8 lead, the first lead for UVa-Wise since leading 3-2 early in the contest.
Twenty-four seconds later, Shepherd's Emily Brown tied the score before teammate Lilian Funke gave the Rams the lead at 10-9 with just over six minutes to play.
Once again, Dennehy's club would be faced with adversity as Erin Smith was given a yellow card following the ensuing draw control.
The Cavs would withstand playing a player down for two minutes but still trailed by a goal with 2:35 to play.
The Rams' Sarah Wendt would then commit a turnover giving the guests one final shot at tying the score.
Grasham would make the most of the opportunity as the junior scored unassisted with 90 seconds to play to tie the game at 10-10.
UVa-Wise would win the draw control but an effort to hold for the final shot of regulation would go by the wayside thanks to a defensive play by Wendt.
With 13 ticks showing on the clock, the Cavs would be whistled for a foul allowing the Rams a free position shot.
Reilly would be up to the challenge as she recorded her 18th save of the day to force overtime.
Shepherd would have the first possession of the extra session but would fail to get a shot off. After Reilly scooped up the groundball, Grasham would score the game-winning goal to send Cavalier players, coaches and fans into a euphoric state.
The championship comes in just the fourth year of the program and completes a perfect MEC regular season at 5-0. The conference title is the first for a women's program at the College since the softball team captured the 2014 tournament crown.
Sophomore Jesse French tallied a hat trick with three goals while Gobbi, Jessica Apgar and Reilly had four groundballs each in the win.
