WISE - - UVa-Wise's offense continued to be too much for Mountain East Conference foes as the Cavaliers rolled to a 19-7 women's lacrosse win over the University of Charleston Sunday. UVa-Wise honored its first senior class prior to the game as Amber Brown, Rachel Cole, Lauren Donahue, Annie Hanson, Hannah Marshall and Melanie Reilly played their final regular season home game at Smith Stadium.
UVa-Wise (10-4, 3-0 MEC) started fast by scoring 10 of the game's first 11 goals to put the game out of reach in the first 19 minutes.
The 19 goals were a season-high for the Cavaliers who have now scored at least 13 goals in six consecutive games.
Junior Kristin Gobbi tallied seven goals in the win while Marshall netted four goals and Rachel Cole scored three times to also record hat tricks in the win.
Charleston (7-6, 1-2 MEC) never recovered from the slow start as the visitors struggled to score on senior goalie Reilly. Reilly finished the game with 13 saves and a pair of groundballs.
Marshall added four groundballs, two caused turnovers and a draw control to her stat line while Cole collected a game-high six draw controls.
Meghan Dennehy's club was opportunistic in free position chances, converting 3-of-5 opportunities.
Overall, the Cavs won the draw control battle 16-to-9 while seven players scored at least one goal.
The win allows UVa-Wise to remain in sole possession of first place in the league standings. The team will wrap up the regular season with a pair of MEC road contests next week. First up, UVa-Wise will visit West Virginia Wesleyan Friday in a 3 p.m. first draw.
