Softball Splits Doubleheader with Urbana

URBANA, Ohio - - UVa-Wise split a doubleheader with Urbana University Sunday afternoon. The Cavs fell in a low scoring game one, 3-1, but rallied back behind an impressive performance by pitcher Taylor Brandts who allowed just one hit in the 7-0 shutout of the Blue Knights in game two.

UVa-Wise (25-19, 14-14 MEC) put itself in position to score in both the first and second inning of game one, but would leave two stranded in each frame.

Scoreless through four and 1/2 innings, Urbana (9-37, 7-21 MEC) scored three runs in the bottom of fifth. Kylah Swanson singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Briana Bamber would walk on base to advance Swanson to third. Jenna VanHoose then scored Swanson on an RBI single to shortstop. Bamber would cross home plate on a RBI single by Riley Curtis as Urbana loaded the bases before a single to right field by Mykee Holtz pushed across VanHoose.

UVa-Wise would look to score in the top of the sixth when Taylor Creasey doubled before advancing to third on the next at-bat. Catcher's interference would allow Lucindy Lawson to reach first base but a fly out would leave two stranded for the Cavs.

The Cavs would get a run in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit. Back-to-back singles by pinch hitter Madison David and Zoe Millard would put runners in the corner for the Cavs as Ava Hockey re-entered the lineup. A fly out by Alexis Miles would score Hockey as the Cavs ended the inning with two more fly outs as Urbana went on to take game one, 3-1.

Millard went 3-for-4 at the plate while Lawson was 2-for-2 in game one.

Lapallo fell to 6-5 with the loss allowing six hits with three strikeouts in six innings inside the circle.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cavaliers scored seven runs on 13 hits and no errors.

UVa-Wise jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning to start game two. With one out, Millard singled and advanced to second on an error by the Blue Knights. Bridget Henzel would then single to third base before a fly out by Miles would place Millard on third and in position to score. Creasey would then hit a RBI single up the middle to plate Millard while Henzel advanced to third. Kaylee Jones would load the bases for the Cavs when she reached on a fielding error as Ely followed with a two-RBI double down the left field line to score Creasey and Henzel. UVa-Wise would push one more across when Nikki Smith scored Jones on a single to shortstop.

With two outs to start the fourth frame, Henzel would knock a double to left field before Miles hit a two-RBI blast over the center field wall for a 6-0 Cavalier advantage.

Urbana would get its first hit of the game in the home half of the inning on a single to left field but would be unable to score leaving a runner on base going into the seventh.

UVa-Wise would tack on one more in the top of the seventh as Smith hit a leadoff double to right field before advancing to third on a ground out. Millard then ripped a two-out RBI double to left field to drive home Smith and put the Cavs up 7-0 entering the home half of the inning.
