CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - Charleston completed a four-game sweep of visiting UVa-Wise with a pair of Mountain East Conference baseball wins Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles claimed the opener 3-2 before posting a 7-0 shutout win in the series finale.
UVa-Wise (14-24) jumped to a 1-0 lead after its first trip to the plate Sunday. Hank Banner's club got on the board thanks to a leadoff walk to Stuart Paz who later scored on a two-out single by Brock Smith.
Charleston (25-15) would tie the game in the third inning thanks to some two-out hitting of its own. Gianfranco Morello would single through the left side allowing Jesse Elliot to score an unearned run to tie the game.
The Golden Eagles would push across a pair of runs in the sixth inning when Steven Davis belted a solo homer Hayden Cartt lined a run-scoring single.
The Cavaliers would put up a fight in their final trip to the plate as Smith led off the inning with a double before later scoring on a two-out hit by Matthew Branham. It would be as close as UVa-Wise would get as Davis would throw behind Branham for a 2-3 pickoff for the game's final out with Jordon Turner at the plate.
Duncan saw his record fall to 4-4 as he allowed three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings of work. The sophomore allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four.
Jonathan Carr (1-1) tossed a complete game four-hitter to earn his first win of the year. Carr fanned four and walked one as he guaranteed his squad a series win.
Game two saw the hosts tally nine hits, six of which for extra bases, while starter Anthony Zona hurled a complete game shutout.
UVa-Wise had six different players collect one hit each while Jimmy Vanosdale pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Cavs are scheduled to be back in action at home Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Virginia State.
