SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio - - Despite one of the best individual pitching performances in program history, UVa-Wise suffered a pair of one-run losses at Notre Dame College Saturday afternoon. Senior right-hander Taylor Brandts was perfect for 9 2/3 innings before allowing what proved to be the game-winning base hit in a 1-0 loss in the opener before the Falcons walked the Cavaliers off for the second time in the day thanks to a game-winning single by McKenzie Zigmont.
UVa-Wise (24-18, 13-13 MEC) had an opportunity to take an early lead in game one as Alexis Miles doubled to lead off the second inning. After a failed bunt attempt and a strikeout, Miles moved up a bag when Zoe Millard reached on a throwing error to put runners on the corners with two out. Notre Dame starter Taylor Olson would end the threat by striking out Monica Brandts to wiggle out of the jam.
Notre Dame (16-27, ) would mount no offense against Taylor Brandts. The senior right-hander struck out three of the first four hitters she faced.
Brandts struck out at least one hitter in each of her 10 innings of work while recording multiple K's in four frames.
While Brandts was in the midst of attempting to throw the first perfect game in school history, Olson was keeping UVa-Wise off the scoreboard.
The Cavs threatened to score in the fourth inning as Miles and Taylor Creasey had back-to-back hits with one outs but, Olson retired the final two hitters of the frame on fly balls to left field.
UVa-Wise would post another scoring threat in the sixth when Bridget Henzel singled to lead off the inning. The catcher would not move as the next three hitters were retired on fly balls keeping the game scoreless.
After failing to score in the seventh and eighth inning, the Cavs had the go-ahead run on third in the ninth inning when Creasy tripled to the right centerfield gap. Again, UVa-Wise would strand a runner as Olson would get Nikki Smith to foul out to left field, keeping the game scoreless.
Brandts would sandwich a strikeout in between a pair of ground outs in the home half of the inning to force the 10th inning and the international tiebreak rule into effect.
After recording the final out of the ninth inning, Smith began the 10th frame on second base and moved to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt by Zoe Millard. It would be as close as UVa-Wise would get to scoring as Madison David and Lucindy Lawson would each strikeout swinging.
In the home half of the inning, the Falcons used a sacrifice bunt to move their runner to third with one out before Brandts collected her 14th strikeout of the game for the second out of the inning. Erin Calhoun then stepped to the plate and produced not only Notre Dame's first hit of the game but the first ball that left the infield as she singled to left field allowing pinch runner Alyssa Larson to score the winning run.
The loss dropped Brandts to 13-9 on the year but, it was the deepest a UVa-Wise pitcher had ever worked into a game without allowing a base runner.
The Cavs stranded seven runners in the loss, Miles and Creasey each went 2-for-4 to lead the offense.
Olson struck out 11 without issuing a walk to improve to 8-14 on the year.
Game two featured another pitcher's duel as Rachel Lapallo and Zigmont posted zeros for each of the first four innings.
UVa-Wise broke a 17-inning scoring drought in the fifth inning when Miles doubled home Millard to give the guests a 1-0 advantage.
The lead was short lived as Ariel Linberger singled in a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to put the Falcons in front 2-1.
The score would remain unchanged until Casey Chambers stepped to the plate leading off the seventh. Chambers delivered with a homer over the right field wall to knot the score 2-2.
Zigmont would then retire the next three hitters to give her club a shot at its second walk off win of the afternoon.
Notre Dame did just that as Calhoun reached with one out on an infield single before moving to second on a ground out. She then went to third base on a wild pitch before Zigmont lined a game-winning hit to right field.
Millard went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the loss while Lapallo dropped to 6-4 on the season as she surrendered three runs (two earned) in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Zigmont ran her record to 8-7 with the complete game win.
UVa-Wise will be back in action Sunday on the road at 12 p.m. against Urbana University.
