UVa-Wise Splits Doubleheader with Concord

ATHENS, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise softball split a pair of games with the Mountain Lions of Concord University Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers took game one with a 6-0 shutout, but fell in game two, 4-3.

UVa-Wise (24-16, 13-11 MEC) had six runs on 13 hits and no errors in their dominating game one win over the Mountain Lions.

UVa-Wise got off to a hot start as the team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A leadoff double to left field by Kaylee Jones got the Cavs started as Bridget Henzel followed with a single, advancing Jones to third. Henzel would steal second before Samantha Ely hit a sacrifice fly out to left field to score Jones and put Henzel on third. Alexis Miles then hit a RBI single to plate Henzel while Miles advanced to third on a fielding error. Nikki Smith would get another RBI single for the Cavs, scoring Miles for an unearned run. A Zoe Millard single allowed Smith to advance to third on a fielding error before stealing home to give the Cavs their fourth run of the inning.

Concord (13-21, 10-14 MEC) attempted to get on the board in the bottom of the third frame when a Darby Fitzpatrick walk and Jenna Witt single put the Mountain Lions in a position to score with two outs. UVa-Wise pitcher Taylor Brandts would get her third strikeout of the inning on the next at bat, leaving two stranded for the Mountain Lions heading into the fourth.

The Cavs would push two more across in the top of the seventh starting with a leadoff homer to left field off the bat of Miles. Smith then doubled down the right field line before pinch-hitter Madison David singled up the middle, scoring Smith.

The Mountain Lions would try to rally in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but back-to-back strikeouts would leave all three runners stranded as the Cavs went on to earn a 6-0 shutout of Concord.

Jones and Henzel were both 2-for-3 with a run while Smith went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI. Miles was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI, including a home run.

Taylor Brandts (13-7) picked up another win for the Cavs, allowing only three hits and fanning 10 in seven innings inside the circle.

Concord's Darby Fitzpatrick (8-7) surrendered the loss as she scattered 13 hits with two strikeouts in a complete game effort.

The Cavs opened up game two with an early 2-0 lead over the Mountain Lions. Back-to-back singles by Ely and Miles followed by a ground out by Lucindy Lawson put the Cavs in position to score. Taylor Creasey then drove home Miles and Ely with a triple down the right field line.

Concord would respond in the home half of the second inning with two runs to knot the game. Amber Stokes would double to center field before Alycea Watson doubled in Stokes. Abby Beatty then hit an RBI single to score Watson.

The Mountain Lions would get their first lead in the bottom of the fourth frame with a solo homer by Stokes putting Concord ahead, 3-2.

UVa-Wise would push one across in the top of the fifth to tie up the game once again. Jones would walk on to first base before a sacrifice hit followed by a fly out to right field placed her on third. An illegal pitch by Concord would allow Jones to cross home plate for the Cavs with the scoreboard reading 3-3 heading into the bottom half of the inning.

The game would go into extra innings with the Cavs in position to score in the top of the eighth. With only one out, Creasey hit a single, but would be thrown out at second on the next play while Smith reached on a fielder's choice.  Zoe Millard then singled down the left field line as Smith advanced to second. Monica Brandts would load the bases as she reached first on a fielding error, but Concord would get its third out on the next at-bat leaving three stranded for the Cavs entering the bottom of the inning.

The Mountain Lions would get their winning run in the home half of the eighth frame with a double by Blunt followed by a single by Pritchard putting Concord in scoring position before Blunt scored on a fielder's choice.

Ely was 2-for-3 with a run while Creasey went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

Taylor Brandts fell to 13-8 on the season with the loss, allowing five hits with two strikeouts in three and 1/3 innings.

The Mountain Lions' Fitzpatrick improved to 9-7 with the win as she scattered two hits in just one inning inside the circle.

UVa-Wise will return to action on Saturday, April 21, as the Cavs take on Notre Dame College on the road. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
