GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise earned a sweep of Goldey-Beacom College on Friday afternoon on day one of the Pioneer Classic. The Cavs shutout the Lightening in five innings in game one, 14-0, and earned a 3-2 victory in eight innings in game two.
The Cavaliers (9-5) opened up game one scoring two runs in the top of the first inning when Alexis Sheehan singled to centerfield with the bases loaded, scoring Bridget Henzel and Kaylee Jones.
UVa-Wise would get six runs in the home half of the second and third inning to take a 14-0 advantage heading into the fourth.
In the second inning, Henzel would like a two-RBI single sending home Samantha Ely and Zoe Millard. Nikki Smith would then single down the left field line to plate Henzel and Jones. Smith would then score on a double by Monica Brandts.
Henzel and Taylor Creasey would both get two RBI in the home half of the third followed by Sheehan hitting a single up the middle allowing Creasey to score. Sheehan would then cross home when Ava Hockey singled to third as UVa-Wise sealed a 14-0 victory.
Goldey-Beacom (0-3) got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the third but would not be able to score as they left one stranded.
UVa-Wise finished the game with 18 hits while Goldey-Beacom connected on just two.
Henzel had an impressive performance for the Cavs going 3-for-3 with three runs and four RBI. Both Creasey and Sheehan went 2-for-3 with a run apiece. Nikki Smith went 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI while Jones went 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI. Ava Hockey finished game one going 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI.
Taylor Brandts improved to 5-2 allowing just two hits in five innings with nine strikeouts.
Alexa Calareso (0-1) collected the loss for the Lightening as she allowed 10 hits.
The Cavs and Lightening went into extra innings in the second game of the day.
Goldey-Beacom jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Zoe Lockwood scored on a double play. Kylie Doyle would also get an unearned run on a single through the right side by Autumn Hollis.
UVa-Wise would get a run in the bottom of the second when Hockey singled down the left field line to score Sheehan.
Neither team would get anything going again until the bottom of the fifth when the Cavs' Jones doubled to left centerfield to score Ely and tie the game up 2-2.
The Cavs would earn the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Millard placed on second, Ely would use a sacrifice bunt to advance Millard to third. Millard would then score on a wild pitch to give the Cavs a 3-2 win and earn the sweep of the Lightening.
Sheehan and Ely were both 1-for-3 with each scoring a run. Jones went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Millard was 1-for-4 with a run. Hockey was 1-for-2 with a RBI in the win.
Raychel Lapallo (2-2) earned the win as she pitched a complete game allowing four hits with two strikeouts.
Taylor Beres (0-1) picked up her first loss of the season allowing three runs with eight strikeouts.
UVa-Wise will face Belmont Abbey at 1 p.m. and host institution Tusculum College at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
