GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - - UVa-Wise earned another sweep on Sunday, defeating Belmont Abbey, 4-3, in game one and Tusculum College, 2-0, in game two of the Pioneer Classic.
Belmont Abbey (8-16) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second when Elena Duran singled to the pitcher to score Fulton. With the bases loaded, the Crusaders' Morgan Smith singled to right centerfield to earn a two-RBI.
UVa-Wise (11-5) would respond in the home half of the second inning behind a double to right centerfield by Samantha Ely, sending home Ava Hockey and Monica Brandts.
The Cavaliers would get another run in the bottom of the third inning when Nikki Smith singled to right field to score Lucindy Lawson and knot the game at 3-3 heading into the fourth.
UVa-Wise would get the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when a sacrifice bunt by Madison David advanced Casey Chambers to third base. Ely would then double to left centerfield to score Chambers and give the Cavaliers their first win of the day.
Ely went 2-for-3 with three RBI while Lawson was 2-for-3 with a run. Monica Brandts and Hockey both went 1-for-2 with a run while Chambers was 1-for-1 with a run.
Kailyn Spencer (2-2) picked up the win for the Cavs allowing three runs in seven innings of work with three strikeouts.
Annabeth Watkins (2-8) collected the loss for Belmont Abbey allowing five hits and two runs with two strikeouts.
In game two, both UVa-Wise and Tusculum (13-9) struggled to get anything going. Neither team would score until the sixth inning when the Cavs earned a run off of a solo homer to left field by Bridget Henzel.
UVa-Wise would score again in the seventh inning when David flied out to centerfield scoring Chambers and giving the Cavs a 2-0 shutout of the Pioneers.
Taylor Brandts fired a complete game shutout to improve to 6-2 on the year. The senior fanned nine while scattering five hits in her eighth complete game effort of the season.
Allison Pate (6-4) notched the loss for the Pioneers allowing seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts in seven innings.
The Cavs will return to action Saturday, Mar. 17, as they open conference play on the road with a doubleheader against West Virginia State. Game times are slated for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
