Cavs Drop Doubleheader at Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. - - Virginia State posted a doubleheader baseball sweep of UVa-Wise Sunday afternoon by scores of 4-3 and 10-3. With the doubleheader sweep, the Trojans won the four-game series three games to one.

In the opener, UVa-Wise (3-10) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when senior third baseman Stuart Paz knocked in sophomore Jordon Turner on a RBI groundout.

Virginia State (10-4-1) would be unable to get on the board until the bottom of the fourth inning when Aaron Harris' RBI groundout tied the contest. Later in the frame, the Trojans took the lead on Jamar Hinton's RBI sacrifice bunt.

The Cavaliers tied the game on Zachary Blaeser's RBI double in the sixth inning but run-scoring hits by Harris and Adarius Moody gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead moving to the final inning.

UVa-Wise put up a fight as Brett Yates reached second on an error to lead off the frame before stealing third. The second baseman would later score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of David Thomas but it would be all Hank Banner's team would get as the team suffered a 4-3 setback.

Redshirt sophomore Trevor Neville allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings pitched; the left-hander fanned three against one walk while scattering five hits in the loss.

Gerald Taylor took the mound win by allowing a pair of runs in six innings of work. The senior allowed nine hits while walking two and striking out three. Joshua Welcher picked up the save by allowing an unearned run in the seventh.

Matthew Branham, Blaeser and Thomas had two hits each to pace the Cavs' offense in game one.

Virginia State jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the series finale en route to the 10-3 triumph. The Trojans lined 10 hits while walking six times to claim the series victory.

Shortstop Sisqo Scott was a perfect 3-for-3 and Jahleel Sewer added three RBI in the win.

Tyler Blaum had a pair of hits and added a sacrifice fly RBI in the loss.

Welcher posted the win on the hill by fanning seven in six innings of work.

UVa-Wise and Virginia State split a doubleheader Saturday, statistics from those games are not yet available.

The two teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader in Wise Thursday, weather permitting.
