Gobbi Stays Hot, Cavs Down Railsplitters 17-12

WISE - - A quartet of Cavaliers recorded a hat trick as UVa-Wise claimed a 17-12 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Lincoln Memorial University at Carl Smith Stadium Wednesday.  Kristin Gobbi tied for game-high goal honors with four as Meghan Dennehy's squad improved to 4-1 at home.

UVa-Wise (6-3) scored six of the final seven goals of the opening half to turn a 6-5 deficit to an 11-7 halftime advantage. Sophomore Jesse French scored two of her three goals during the spurt while Gobbi, McKayla Grasham and Riley Fenster also found the back of the net during the decisive stretch.

LMU (6-5) never recovered as the Cavs scored the first three goals of the second half to push the margin to 14-7.

The Railsplitters would get no closer than five goals as the visitors scored the final two goals of the contest to provide the final margin of 17-12.

Sydney Steinberg and Charlotte Hess had seven groundballs each while Rachel Cole tallied 10 draw controls to add to her three-goal performance. Grasham posted five groundballs, three caused turnovers and a pair of draw controls while netting three goals.

Amara Moss led LMU with four goals but the Railsplitters were successful on just 13-of-23 clear attempts, including a 6-for-13 showing in the second half.

UVa-Wise will be off until next Saturday when Young Harris visits Wise, first draw from Smith Stadium is set for 11 a.m.
