Lacrosse Falls Short in Comeback Bid, Young Harris 15 UVa-Wise 13

WISE - - Young Harris built a three-goal lead with eight minutes to play and held off a late rally to knock off UVa-Wise 15-13 in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Carl Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 14-11 with eight minutes to play, UVa-Wise (6-4) mounted a comeback effort. Rachel Cole scored her second goal of the game to make it a two-goal game with 5:44 to play before Hannah Marshall found the back of the net with 3:42 to play to cut the lead to one.

Young Harris (9-5) would put the game away with 3:03 to play when Erika Cross scored unassisted to push the lead to two and provide the winning margin of 15-13.

The game was played in frigid weather with temperatures hovering around 30 degrees and snow coming down and neither team got off to a fast start offensively.

The Mountain Lions jumped out to a 4-1 lead with 16:28 to play in the opening half as Anna Luckie, Meghan Tonnesen, Nicole Kernohan and Cross all scored in the opening moments of the contest.

UVa-Wise countered with two goals by Kristin Gobbi and a goal by Hannah Marshall to tie the game with 10:30 to play in the half.

The Cavaliers took their first lead of the game when Sydney Steinberg scored off an Annie Hanson pass with 4:51 to play in the first 30 minutes.

Young Harris scored the final two goals of the half as Kendra Parenteau scored unassisted before Kernohan scored off a Cross pass to send the visitors to halftime with an 8-6 lead.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the second half as McKayla Grasham, Marshall and Cole each scored in the first four minutes of the half to give Meghan Dennehy's team a 9-8 advantage.

Rachel Lepine and Parenteau would then score consecutive goals for the Mountain Lions to regain the lead for the guests before Jesse French and Jessica Apgar scored for the Cavs to give the hosts a 11-10 lead.

The next momentum swing proved to be the decisive one as Young Harris rattled off four straight goals en route to the 15-13 triumph.

Kernohan netted four goals while Lepine tallied six groundballs in the win. In goal, the Mountain Lions' Julia Darroch recorded 14 saves and 13 groundballs to anchor the Young Harris defense.

Marshall tied Kernohan for game-high scoring honors with four while adding four draw controls and four caused turnovers. Gobbi netted three goals and tacked on five draw controls in the loss.

Next up, UVa-Wise will begin Mountain East Conference play Friday when Wheeling Jesuit University visits Smith Stadium in a 7 p.m. first draw.
