Softball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Against Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - - After receiving votes for the second consecutive week, the Cavaliers had a strong performance against Glenville State Saturday as they swept the Pioneers. UVa-Wise won game one, 4-2, and had an impressive offensive showing in game two with a 9-4 victory.

Glenville (10-14, 1-7 MEC) scored its only runs of game one in the bottom of the second. The Pioneers got one across on a solo homer by Tori Ward before Hayley Olson singled to center field to send home Hannah Wright, giving Glenville an early 2-0 lead.

UVa-Wise (16-6, 5-1 MEC) would respond with a run in the fourth frame. Samantha Ely doubled to center field before advancing to third on a fly out by Bridget Henzel. A single to right field off the bat of Taylor Creasey would score Ely and put the Cavs down, 2-1, heading into the fifth inning.

The Cavs would score three more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Ely knocked another double followed by a single to shortstop by Bridget Henzel to get two on base. Creasey then popped a homerun to center field scoring Ely and Henzel.

Ely was 2-for-4 with two runs while Creasey went 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI.

With her sixth consecutive win, Taylor Brandts improved to 9-2 as she scattered five hits and fanned nine in a complete game effort.

Ward (3-4) picked up the loss for the Pioneers allowing five hits and striking out four in six innings of work.

UVa-Wise earned the sweep in game two as the offense put up nine runs on 13 hits with two errors.

Glenville got on the board in the bottom of the second when Olson hit a double to center field scoring Cassidy Taylor and Wright. Catherine Pelfrey would then hit a single to score Olson and put the Pioneers on top, 3-0.

The Cavs would take the lead in the fourth inning as UVa-Wise pushed across four runs. Nikki Smith would reach base on an error before Monica Brandts hammered a homerun to score Smith. With Zoe Millard on first, Ely would give the Cavs their third homerun of the day and allow UVa-Wise to take a 4-3 advantage.

Glenville tied the game up in the home half of the fourth, 4-4, with an RBI single by Ally Brown scoring Pelfrey.

UVa-Wise regained the lead in the fifth frame when Monica Brandts singled to second base, allowing Henzel to reach home and UVa-Wise take a 5-4 lead.

The Cavs would score four more runs in the final frame to extend the lead. Creasey and Lucindy Lawson would both get on base before Creasey would score on an error. Smith would reach first on an error and steal second as Monica Brandts singled to right field and scored Lawson. On a wild pitch by the Pioneers' Kahla Bergen, Kelsy Padgett advanced to second while Smith scored an unearned run. Padgett would then get to third on another wild pitch and score on a single off the bat of Millard to push UVa-Wise ahead, 9-4, and give the Cavs the sweep of the Pioneers.

Millard and Henzel were 2-for-5 with a run while Millard added an RBI. Ely was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI while Lawson was 2-for-4 with a run. Monica Brandts had an impressive performance going 4-for-4 with a run and four RBI.  

Raychel Lapallo (4-1) earned the win for the Cavs as she scattered six hits and fanned four in four innings.

Taylor Brandts (2) picked up the save for the Cavaliers as she tossed three innings, allowing two hits with four strikeouts.

Brown fell to 7-6 in the Pioneers loss, scattering 11 hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work.

UVa-Wise will return to action tomorrow to face West Virginia Wesleyan on the road for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
