BUCKHANNON, W. Va. - - UVa-Wise softball fell in a doubleheader against West Virginia Wesleyan Monday afternoon. The Cavaliers dropped game one, 7-1, and fell in game two, 2-1.
UVa-Wise (16-8, 5-3 MEC) pushed across its only run of game one in the top of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Zoe Millard hit a RBI single to score Alexis Sheehan and put the Cavs up 1-0.
Wesleyan (13-8, 6-2 MEC) scored its first runs in the home half of the third. Morgan Bruce knocked a RBI single to centerfield to score Sara Scoone before a fly out to left field by Brittani Bible scored Lauryn King, giving the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats pushed two more across home plate in the bottom of the fifth frame when Megan Magsamen scored Brianna Ross and Arianna Smoot with a two RBI single to right field as Wesleyan extended its lead to 4-1.
Wesleyan would get three more runs on the board in the top of the sixth to earn the 7-1 game one victory.
Freshman pitcher Kailyn Spencer fell to 2-3 on the season as she scattered eight hits with a strikeout across four innings.
Wesleyan's Hannah Vet (9-3) notched the Bobcats' victory as she tossed a complete game, allowing six hits with a strikeout.
The Bobcats would take an early 1-0 lead in game two in the bottom of the first inning when a single to left field by Krista Waggoner drove home Madison Casto.
UVa-Wise would get in a position to score in the top of the fourth, but back-to-back groundouts would strand two for the Cavs heading into the bottom of the inning.
Wesleyan drove home another run in the home half of the fourth when Bible singled to center field, scoring Smoot to put the Bobcats up 2-0.
A solo homer off the bat of Samantha Ely in the top of the sixth frame would put the Cavs down, 2-1.
UVa-Wise found itself in a position to score once again in the seventh, but would leave two on base as the Cavs fell in a tough 2-1 loss to wrap up the day.
Taylor Brandts (9-3) twirled six innings, scattering four hits and fanning two.
The Bobcats' Vet improved to 10-3 as she tossed a complete game allowing four hits with a strikeout.
UVa-Wise will return to action on Friday, March 30, for a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Charleston. The Cavs will then play West Virginia State on Saturday, March 31, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
