Cavs Start Fast, Down Wolves 17-6

WISE - - Kristin Gobbi and McKayla Grasham scored four goals each as UVa-Wise rolled to a 17-6 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over Newberry at Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon. Meghan Dennehy's club dominated every facet of the game; the Cavaliers forced 30 turnovers by the Wolves while winning the groundball battle 47-33 and taking 16 of 23 contested draw controls.

UVa-Wise (5-2) started fast and never looked back Gobbi scored a pair of goals in the opening five minutes to stake her team to a 2-0 lead.

After a Newberry (2-7) goal, Grasham scored to make it a 3-1 contest. The Wolves would score a woman-down goal to make it 3-2 before a Dennehy timeout seemed to energize the squad.

UVa-Wise would score the game's next eight goals to take a commanding 11-2 lead.

Grasham would score a pair of goals during the spurt while Rahcel Cole, Hannah Marshall, Riley Fenster, Samantha Hill and Gobbi also scored.

Jessica Apgar registered nine groundballs while Sydney Steinberg added seven in the win. Apgar also caused six turnovers as part of 16 caused turnovers by the Cavs.

Cole netted three goals to join Grasham and Gobbi with hat tricks on the day, the 17 goals scored are the most this season for UVa-Wise.

Next up, UVa-Wise will travel to Lees-McRae College on Wednesday. First draw is set for 5 p.m. from Banner Elk, N.C.
