Slow Starting Cavs Drop 16-9 Decision to The Rock

WISE - - Bre Vodde and Tia Torchia scored five goals each as Slippery Rock claimed a 16-9 non-conference women's lacrosse victory over host UVa-Wise at Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Rock raced out to a 9-2 halftime lead by limiting the Cavaliers to just six shots on goal in the opening 30 minutes as the visitors improved to 3-0 on the year.

UVa-Wise (4-2) trailed 4-0 mid-way through the first half when Sydney Steinberg broke the ice. The Gainesville, Fla. product scored off a Hannah Marshall assist to make the score 4-1.

Torchia answered for the Rock only to see Steinberg find the back of the net for the second time to make it a 5-2 game with 7:48 to play in the opening half.

The momentum was short lived as Vodde scored back-to-back goals before teammate Ally Cullhane scored two of her three goals to close out the half.

Meghan Dennehy's squad started the second half with a flurry by scoring three of the first four goals of the half to cut the Slippery Rock advantage to 10-5.

Again, Torichia and Vodde had the answer as the pair scored a goal each as part of a 4-0 spurt for the Rock that pushed the lead to 14-5 with 12:21 remaining.

UVa-Wise put up one final push as Gobbi scored consecutive goals before French caught the ball in traffic, spun and scored on a behind the back shot in traffic in front of the net.

French's goal made the score 14-8 with 9:35 left to play.

It would be as close as the Cavs would get as the Rock scored two of the game's final three goals.

French and Gobbi scored three goals each to lead UVa-Wise while Gobbi added a game-high eight groundballs in the loss.

The Cavs turned it over 32 times and were assessed three yellow cards. Slippery Rock finished with 22 shots on goal compared to 14 for UVa-Wise; the Rock also won the groundball battle 48-to-37 and the draw control battle 16-to-11.

Next up, the Cavs will play host to Mars Hill on Wednesday. First draw is set for 4 p.m.
