CARY, N.C. - - UVa-Wise and St. Augustine's wrapped up their three game series Saturday as the two schools split a doubleheader. Sophomore Greg Duncan earned the mound win for the Cavaliers in the opener as he tossed three innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen to aid his club to a 7-2 triumph. In the series finale, the Falcons used a four-run third inning to post a 6-2 win en route to winning the series two-games-to-one.
UVa-Wise (1-2) broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the opener when redshirt junior Brett Yates singled home sophomore Tyler Blaum who led off the inning with a double.
An inning later, Hank Banner's team pushed its lead to 2-0 as redshirt sophomore Josh Haga doubled, stole third and scampered home on a dropped third strike.
St. Augustine's (2-1) would tie the game in the home half of the fourth inning on a two-RBI double by Chuck Davis.
The score would remain unchanged until the visiting half of the sixth when UVa-Wise busted the game open with a four-run frame.
Haga and senior Matt Wright posted back-to-back singles to begin the inning before Zach Blaeser's first RBI in a Cavalier uniform gave his team the lead for good. The shortstop's single would preclude a sacrifice RBI off the bat of Yates, a run-scoring passed pall and a run-scoring double by senior Stuart Paz.
UVa-Wise tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on an unearned run before turning a 6-4-3 double play to end the contest in the home half of the frame.
Haga led the offensive attack with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate. The outfielder added three runs scored while Blaum recorded a pair of RBI in the win.
Duncan scattered two hits while fanning two in relief of starter Will Stamper to earn the win on the mound.
St. Augustine's would score an unearned run in the first and never look back in its game two win.
The Falcons would later break a 1-1 tie in the third with a four-run inning as the hosts posted a 6-2 win to claim the series.
In the loss, sophomore Jordon Turner reached base safely twice while adding an RBI and a run scored. Redshirt sophomore Trevor Nevill allowed a run in three innings of work out of the bullpen. The left-hander struck out four against one walk in his season debut.
