GREENWOOD, S.C. - - UVa-Wise split its doubleheader with Lander University on Tuesday afternoon.
Taylor Brandts continued her dominance in the circle and Taylor Creasy delivered a clutch two-RBI double in game one as UVa-Wise (7-3) claimed a 3-1 victory.
Brandts (4-1) scattered four hits in her fifth complete game effort of the year. The senior right-hander also received a boost from her defense as she struck out just one in the win.
Shortstop Nikki Smith and third baseman Samantha Ely combined for 11 assists in the game to aid Brandts in stranding nine Bearcats' base runners.
UVa-Wise appeared to be on the verge of a big inning in the top of the second when Bridget Henzel singled and Casey Chambers doubled with one out. The Cavaliers loaded the bases on a Taylor Creasy walk but, would only be able to score one run on a Monica Brandts' RBI groundout.Â
The score remained unchanged until the top of the sixth inning when Taylor Creasey delivered what proved to be the knockout blow.
The leftfielder lined a two-strike pitch off the right field wall allowing Henzel and Kaylee Jones to scamper home.
Lander (12-4) would score an unearned run in the home half of the inning on a Brianna Surrento RBI single before an inning ending groundout to Smith ended the threat.
Brandts would find herself in another jam in the seventh inning. After a walk and an error led off the frame, the Bearcats had the tying run on first and the winning run at the plate with nobody out.
Jamie Pisel would then line out to Jones at second base before Jones snagged a pop fly in foul territory for the second out of the frame.
Creasy would seal the win when she ran down Hannah Sorrow's fly ball at the warning track for the final out.
Creasy finished 2-for-2 with a walk while Henzel scored a pair of runs in the victory.
Surrento (4-2) was the tough luck loser in the circle as she allowed just one earned run in seven innings of work.
Lander would come out strong in game two pushing two runs across in the bottom of the first when a sacrifice by Chandler Carey allowed Sydney Grimes to score an unearned run followed by Pisel scoring a second unearned run on an error.
The Bearcats would strike again in the home half of the second inning when Kasey Rogers' solo homerun put Lander up 3-0.
Lander would get another run in the bottom of the third when a walk with bases loaded allowed the Bearcats to tack one more run on the scoreboard.
Neither team would be able to get anything going offensively for the rest of the game with the final score reading 4-0 as the two schools split the doubleheader.Â
Raychel Lapallo (1-1) would collect the Cavs loss in game two allowing three hits and one run with three strikeouts.
Lander's Ferguson totaled eight strikeouts without allowing an earned run in seven innings of work as she improved to 7-1.
UVa-Wise will return home to face Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Cavalier Field.
