FLORENCE, S.C. - - UVa-Wise went 2-0 on Sunday in day two of Francis Marion's Winter Wrangler. The Cavaliers downed Mars Hill 6-5 in game one and bounced back from yesterday's loss to earn a 7-1 victory over Francis Marion to wrap up the tournament.
Mars Hill (3-4) would get on the board first in game one when the Lions' Ragan Broome doubled to right centerfield with the bases loaded plating all three runners to put Mars Hill up 3-0 to start the game.
UVa-Wise (6-2) would respond in the top of the third placing two runners on base behind back-to-back walks for senior Samantha Ely and freshman Kaylee Jones. Sophomore Taylor Creasey would reach on a fielding error to load the bases before sophomore Julia Hoy scored Ely on a single to left centerfield followed by senior Bridget Henzel plating Jones on another single. A groundout by junior Ava Hockey would allow Creasey to score an unearned run to tie the game 3-3.
Mars Hill managed to push a run across in the bottom of the third when Harris doubled to left centerfield allowing the Lions to score and give Mars Hill a 4-3 lead.
Sophomore Nikki Smith would get a walk in the top of the fourth inning and then steal second before Ely knocked a single up the middle to send Smith home and tie the game 4-4.
The Lions would regain their advantage in the bottom of the fourth with a fly ball to left centerfield by Addison Harris placing her on base. Kayleigh Jonas then reached on a fielding error allowing Harris to score an unearned run and put the score at 5-4.
The Cavs would rally in the top of the sixth when both Hockey and senior Zoe Millard singled down the left field line to get on base followed by both advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Smith. Ely would then plate Hockey and Millard off of a double to right centerfield to give UVa-Wise a 6-5 lead and earn the team's first victory of the day.
Ely finished game one going 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI. Millard went 3-for-4 against the Lions with one run while Hockey was 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
UVa-Wise tossed three pitchers in junior Erika Counts, sophomore Kaitlyn Stratton, and freshman Ashleigh Nalls. Nalls (1-0) would be the winning pitcher for the Cavs giving the King George, Va. native her first collegiate victory. Nalls allowed five hits and one run with one strikeout in five innings inside the circle.
Mars Hill also threw a trio of pitchers with Casey Stanek (0-1) receiving the loss as she allowed three hits and scattered two runs with five strikeouts in four innings.
UVa-Wise kept the momentum going heading into the second game of the day against host institution Francis Marion (9-6). The Cavaliers had seven runs on 13 hits, scoring five runs in the third frame.
Neither team would score until the top of the second inning when UVa-Wise put one run across on a single to shortstop by Smith plating senior Moncia Brandts to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead.
The Cavs would run away with the ball game in the top of the third pushing five runs across home plate. Jones would score on a single up the middle by Creasey followed by Hockey knocking a single to centerfield plating Creasey and Henzel. Millard would hit another single sending home Monica Brandts. Smith would get a RBI as Hockey scored an unearned run to put the Cavs ahead 6-0.
The Patriots would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Jennie Polak reached on a fielding error to score Sam Chiudina.
UVa-Wise scored again in the top of the seventh inning when a sacrifice fly out to left field sent home Henzel to put the Cavs up 7-1 and earn a sweep in day two of the tournament.
Hockey went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI while Smith went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Creasey and Jones both finished going 2-for-4 and each scoring a run while Creasey added an RBI in the win.
Senior pitcher Taylor Brandts (3-1) collected the win allowing six hits and just one run with seven strikeouts in a complete game.
Francis Marion's Reece Davis (4-3) picked up the loss allowing 10 hits and fanning six runs. Â
UVa-Wise will remain on the road to face Lander University in a double-header on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. in Greenwood, S.C.
