FLORENCE, S.C. - - UVa-Wise split games in Florence, S.C. Saturday afternoon putting away game one with a 10-1 win over Mars Hill and falling 6-2 to Francis Marion.
The Cavaliers (4-2) came in hot against Mars Hill (3-3) in game one Saturday leaping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Nikki Smith would single up the middle followed by a hit-by-pitch to put senior Samantha Ely on base and advance Smith to second. Freshman Kaylee Jones would then double to centerfield to score Smith and advance Ely to third to put the score 1-0.
Junior Lucindy Lawson would get a walk to get on first and load the bases before junior Shannon Bennett tripled to right centerfield to earn a three-RBI triple sending home Ely, Jones, and Lawson to put the Cavs ahead 4-0.
UVa-Wise would put another runner across home plate when Smith grounded out to shortstop to score junior Ava Hockey on an unearned run.
Mars Hill would get on the board in the top of the fourth when the Lions' Kayleigh Jones doubled to centerfield allowing Christiana Marasa to cross home plate and cut the Cavs advantage to 5-1.
The Cavaliers would run away with the ball game in the home half of the fourth scoring five runs in the inning.
Jones would get a walk and load the bases for the Cavs before a single down the right side by Lawson would score Smith. Senior Bridget Henzel would fly out to centerfield on a sacrifice to score Ely followed by sophomore Taylor Creasey hitting a single through the right side of the field to send home Jones and advance Lawson to third. Senior Monica Brandts would then double to right centerfield allowing both Creasey and Lawson to score and secure the team's first win of the day.
The Cavaliers recorded seven hits and no errors in the game with senior pitcher Taylor Brandts improving to 2-1 on the season. Taylor Brandts allowed just four hits and one run in five innings of work.
Mars Hill threw three pitchers in the game with Marasa (1-2) receiving the loss for the Lions.
In game two, UVa-Wise would strike first following a leadoff double from Creasey in the top of the third. Creasey would come around to score on Hockey's fielder's choice.
The lead would be short lived as Francis Marion (9-5) would answer back following a single, stolen base and an RBI single. Lawson would come up to the plate in the top of the fourth and put the Cavaliers back in front as she smacked a solo homerun over the right field fence.
The Patriots would answer right back in the bottom half of the frame on a two out RBI single from Chelsea Welty. Francis Marion would blow the game open in the bottom half of the sixth inning on two hits and one UVa-Wise error. The Patriots would score three runs in the inning on a walk, single, double and two wild pitches.
Freshman Kailyn Spencer (1-1) went five and a third in the circle giving up nine hits, four runs and striking out five. Creasey would have two of the Cavaliers three hits in the game.
Francis Marion stranded 11 runners on base over the course of the game. The Patriots pounded out 11 hits to Wise's three as Sydney Holland improved to 5-2 on the season for the Patriots. Holland spun a complete game, three hit, and six strikeout performance inside the circle.
UVa-Wise returns to action tomorrow taking on Mars Hill at 10 a.m. and Francis Marion at noon in Florence, S.C.
