Haga's Big Day Leads Cavs to Win at Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. - - Redshirt sophomore Josh Haga had a 4-for-5 day at the plate to lead UVa-Wise to a 12-11 non-conference victory over Southern Wesleyan Saturday. The outfielder homered, doubled twice and scored four runs from his leadoff position to help the Cavaliers halt a six-game losing skid.

UVa-Wise (2-7) would take a nine run lead at 11-2 on a groundball double play in the top of the sixth inning before things began to get interesting.

Southern Wesleyan's (8-3) Noah Fritz and Izzy Martinez had RBI singles before a double by Getford's made the score 11-5.

In the top of the seventh belted a solo homer over the left field wall to make the score 12-5, seemingly giving UVa-Wise enough of a cushion but, the Warriors would not go away.

Southern Wesleyan received a sacrifice fly from Julio Justo in the home half of the seventh inning before a bases loaded walk made the score 12-7. A Martinez RBI groundout got the hosts within slam range at 12-8 moving to the top of the eighth inning.

The Cavs would go in order in the eighth to get the Warriors back to the bat rack. UVa-Wise reliever Greg Duncan would allow a base hit in the inning but would work out of the jam to send the game to the ninth with his club up four.

Haga would collect his second double of the game in the top of the frame but would be stranded sending the game to the bottom of the ninth.

The first two Warriors of the inning would reach base before a ground out put runners on second and third with one away. Martinez would plate both runners with a single before moving into scoring position on a passed ball. With the tying run at the plate, Garrett singled putting men on the corners.

A.J. Canine would come off the bench to pinch hit, delivering a single to make the score 12-11 with the tying run at third and the winning run at first base.

From there, Duncan would lock in as the right-hander struck out Gettford before inducing a game-ending fly ball to seal the victory.

UVa-Wise raced out to a 7-0 lead after the first two innings. Sophomore Dawson Cagle belted a three-run homerun in the first inning while Brett Yates, Matthew Branham and David Thomas all had an RBI in the early game outburst.

Southern Wesleyan got on the scoreboard in the third inning on an RBI groundout from Connor Ewing and a run-scoring double by Jesse Getford.

The momentum was short lived as RBI singles by Yates and Cagle gave Hank Banner's squad a 9-2 before an error allowed the lead to balloon to 10-2 advantage after 3 ½ innings.

Yates and Thomas had three hits each in the win while Cagle tied Martinez for game-high RBI honors with four.

Nate Thompson (1-1) earned the mound win as he tossed two innings of scoreless ball to earn his first victory of the year.

UVa-Wise will take an eleven day break before playing its home opener on Feb. 28 against Bluefield State College.
