INSTITUTE, W. Va. - - The Cavaliers wrapped up their regular season on the road against West Virginia State Saturday afternoon. UVa-Wise fell to the Yellow Jackets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-15).
Sophomore Madelyn Lawrence had a match-high 11 kills along with three blocks for UVa-Wise (5-25, 2-14 MEC). Sophomore Brooke Abbott posted six kills while hitting .400 in the match. Sophomore setter Makayla Ledford recorded 23 of the Cavs 26 assist while junior Morgan Milligan registered 18 digs in the loss.
West Virginia State (25-10, 10-6 MEC) would take an early 8-4 advantage following a pair of service aces by the Yellow Jackets. Another service ace for West Virginia State later in the set would give the Yellow Jackets a 16-9 lead heading into a timeout. A late 5-1 run for the Cavs would put UVa-Wise down just two points, but the Yellow Jackets would get the final point for a close 25-22 decision in the first set.
UVa-Wise would attempt to shift the momentum early in the second set as they opened the set on top of West Virginia State, 7-4. A kill by freshman Kelsey Green would put the Cavs up by three points, 12—9, but the Yellow Jackets would use a 4-0 run to regain the lead, 13-12, as UVa-Wise called a timeout. West Virginia State would go on another run to extend its lead to 20-13 late in the set before winning the second set, 25-17.
The Cavs would take the lead to start again in the third set with the score 7-5 on a kill by Abbott. West Virginia State would come from behind once more, using an 8-0 run to take an 18-10 advantage. UVa-Wise would be unable to come back as the Yellow Jackets earned a 25-15 third set victory.
UVa-Wise posted 30 kills and 48 digs while West Virginia State had 37 kills, 34 assists, and 51 digs in the Yellow Jackets' win.
