WISE - - Volleyball fell to the Mountain Lions of Concord University Tuesday night in five sets, 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 24-26, 22-25, 15-6). In the Cavs final home game of the season, UVa-Wise also celebrated Senior Night for senior Kyra Jessee.
The Cavs (5-23, 2-12 MEC) were led by freshman Matelyn Gibson who posted 15 kills followed by sophomores Madelyn Lawrence and Brooke Abbott who registered 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Makayla Ledford had 50 assists while junior Morgan Milligan led the Cavs in digs as she notched 23 on the night.
Concord (7-23, 3-11 MEC) jumped out to an 8-2 advantage to start the first set. UVa-Wise would get within two points on a kill by Ledford as the Mountain Lions held a 9-7 lead. A kill by Concord would give them a seven-point advantage later in the set as the Mountain Lions took set one, 25-19.
UVa-Wise would get an early 8-4 lead in the second set on a kill by Lawrence. The two teams battled as they traded points and knotted the set four times before the Mountain Lions claimed a three-point, 22-19 advantage. Back-to-back attack errors by Concord would put UVa-Wise down just one-point, but a Concord kill followed by an error on the Cavs would give the Mountain Lions a 25-22 win in the second set.
A Cavalier attack error pushed Concord to an early 7-2 lead in the third set. UVa-Wise would capitalize on a 6-1 run later in the set to cut the deficit to one-point as the Mountain Lions led, 20-19. A pair of errors by Concord would give UVa-Wise the advantage as the Cavs led 23-22 late. The two teams would tie the set at 24-24 before back-to-back kills for the Cavs led them to a hard-fought 26-24 set three victory.
UVa-Wise carried its momentum into the fourth set, holding a 12-7 lead on a service ace by Jessee. Concord would climb its way back as the Cavs led by one-point later in the set, 18-17. The Cavs stayed aggressive as they closed out the set winning the last three points to take set four, 25-22.
The Cavs pulled ahead 5-3 in the final set on a kill by Lawrence. Concord would go on a 9-0 run to come from behind to take a 12-5 lead before going on to win set five, 15-6.
Volleyball will return to action on Friday, Nov. 2 against the University of Charleston on the road. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
