Cavalier Men Complete the Comeback Against Glenville State in Overtime, 89-87

WISE - - Overcoming a 25-point deficit, the Cavalier men (8-12, 6-8 MEC) completed the comeback over Glenville State (3-16, 2-12 MEC) to earn an 89-87 victory in overtime. The 25-point second half comeback is the largest in Prior Center history by UVa-Wise. In the nail-biting win, senior forward Taiwo Badmus scored his 1,000th point at the 18:35 mark in the second half of the game.

Down two points with 1:46 on the clock in overtime, sophomore point guard Michal Seals nailed a three-point shot to put the Cavaliers up by one, 87-86, with just over a minute to play. Sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea would hit two free throws with less than five seconds left in overtime to give UVa-Wise a three-point advantage, 89-86. Sophomore guard Chance Sheffey would get the rebound off of an intentionally missed free throw by the Pioneers to give the Cavs their first home conference win of the season.

UVa-Wise continued to struggle from the floor in the first half, shooting just 9-for-30 (30 percent) from the field and 2-for-15 (13.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Cavaliers early shooting woes allowed the Pioneers to take a 10-point advantage with 12:42 on the clock.

UVa-Wise would get within six points of Glenville at the 10:48 mark, but the Pioneers were able to extend their lead to 19 points with 3:29 to go in the first. The Cavaliers would head into the locker room down at the half to the Pioneers, 46-23.

The Pioneers' bench outscored the Cavaliers' in the first, 22-0, while UVa-Wise managed to edge Glenville with points in the paint, 14-12. Glenville's Elisha Mayberry led the Pioneers in scoring with 11 points. The Pioneers hit 17-of-32 shots (53.1 percent), going 9-for-17 (52.9 percent) in the first.

Sophomore point guard Michal Seals led all scorers in the first half with 13 points on 6-for-9 shooting.

Glenville would open the second half taking a 25-point advantage, 48-23, with 18:55 on the clock. The Pioneers were knocked down to a 20-point advantage at the 13:28 mark as the Cavaliers slowly chipped away at the lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Badmus put the Cavaliers down just 10 points, 65-55, with 9:33 to go.

Down 74-65, the Cavaliers would go on a 9-0 run to tie the game up at 74 apiece with just under two minutes left in regulation. After a bucket by the Pioneers, Seals would score at the other end to send the game into overtime.

UVa-Wise won the rebound battle in the second half, 24-14, and improved from the floor as the team went 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) in the second. Seals had 14 points and went 100 percent from the foul line while Badmus netted 22 points alongside seven rebounds.

The Pioneers went 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) from the floor in the second, led by Jon Dunmyer who had 12 points and three rebounds.

In overtime, Seals went 4-for-4 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, to help propel the Cavaliers over the Pioneers. The Cavaliers finished the game going 29-for-68 (42.6 percent) from the floor while Glenville shot 33-for-69 (47.8 percent) from the field.

Glenville's Dunmyer and Mayberry were the top scorers for the Pioneers with 22 and 20 points, respectively.

Seals finished with a career-high 38 points on 13-for-21 shooting, adding seven rebounds and six assists. Badmus collected 27 points and nine rebounds while Mosquera-Perea had 11 points and seven rebounds in the win.

UVa-Wise will be on the road this week as the Cavaliers take on No. 1 West Liberty on Feb. 1 and No. 23 Wheeling Jesuit on Feb. 3.
