Cavaliers Fall to No. 4 West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise suffered a 102-67 setback against No. 4 West Liberty on the road Thursday night. The Cavaliers (8-13, 6-9 MEC) were outrebounded by the Hilltoppers (19-1, 14-1 MEC) 50-34 in the loss.

Redshirt senior forward got the Cavaliers on the board first with UVa-Wise keeping it close to open the first half. A fadeaway jumper by sophomore guard Chance Sheffey put the Cavs within one point, 11-10, with 16:13 on the clock.

Another jumper by Sheffey would get UVa-Wise within three, 21-18, at the 12:12 mark. The Hilltoppers would then open up a substantial lead, up by 13 points, 31-18, with 9:22 left in the half. The Cavaliers were plagued by careless mistakes, turning the ball over 10 times in the first half.

West Liberty took a 30-point lead with just under three minutes to go in the half, 53-23. The Cavaliers hit three consecutive 3-point shots to get the lead to 25 points, 61-36, going into the half.

The Hilttoppers' Dalton Bolon led West Liberty in scoring with 14 points in the opening half. Dan Monteroso followed with 11 points while Eric Meininger had nine points in the half. The Hilltoppers shot 60.5 percent (23-for-38) from the floor, hitting 14-of-24 shots from beyond the arc.

UVa-Wise was led in scoring by Sheffey who had 15 points heading into halftime while redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus collected eight points on 3-for-6 shooting. The Cavs significantly improved first half shooting, going 14-for-30 (46.7 percent) from the floor, 3-for-9 (33.3 percent) from downtown.

West Liberty continued to extend its lead in the second half, up by 36 points, 74-38, with 15:38 to go. A dunk by junior guard Rahji Langford would put the deficit under 30 points with the Cavaliers down 76-47 with 13:38 on the clock.

The Hilltoppers would take a 40-point advantage, 90-50, with a little over 10 minutes to play. West Liberty would maintain a double-digit lead throughout the half, defeating the Cavaliers 102-68. West Liberty went 16-for-46 (34.8 percent) from the field in the second half while UVa-Wise shot 11-for-27 (40.7 percent).

The Cavaliers went 25-for-57 (43.9 percent) in the loss while the Hilttoppers' hit 39-of-84 (46.4 percent) from the floor.

Sheffey led all scorers with 20 points while Badmus finished with 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting. West Liberty was led in scoring by Bolon who netted 16 points and added three rebounds and three assists.

UVa-Wise will stay on the road to face Wheeling Jesuit at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
