BUCKHANNON, W.Va. - - West Virginia Wesleyan claimed its first ever women's basketball victory over UVa-Wise with a 60-43 win at the Rockefeller Center Wednesday. The Bobcats held the Cavaliers to 24.2 percent shooting for the game and held a 53-22 lead after three quarters.
Wesleyan (6-13, 4-9 MEC) fell behind 7-2 early but responded with a 31-8 run to close the half and take a 33-15 advantage to intermission.
UVa-Wise (3-15, 2-11 MEC) struggled to put the ball in the basket after the early start. Elise Clyburn's team made just 5-of-30 shots and 2-of-10 free throw attempts in the first half.
The hole proved to be too big to overcome as the Bobcats built their lead to as many as 34 points in the third quarter.
The Cavs would battle back as the team closed the game on a 24-7 run to lose by 14.
Mari Stewart was dominate inside as the forward recorded 14 points and 17 rebounds to lead all players in both categories. Brittany Stawovy added a quartet of 3-pointers en route to 14 points while Stacy Remer netted 11 in the victory.
Bianca Lockamy was the lone Cavalier in double-figure scoring as she finished 4-of-9 from the field to record 10 points. The freshman added eight rebounds in her 28 minutes of play but, UVa-Wise was outrebounded 53-45 in the loss.
Free throw shooting did not improve in the second half for the Cavs, as the squad finished shooting 40 percent (8-20) from the stripe for the game.
UVa-Wise will return to action Saturday at 2 p.m. when Glenville State College visits the Prior Center.
