Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Darrell-Dingus Ely

Cavs Come Up Short Against Mountain Lions

WISE - - Freshman Judy Kaylnn Cummings game-tying 3-point attempt was blocked as Concord University ended its six-game losing streak to UVa-Wise with a 67-64 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory at the Prior Center Saturday.

Concord (9-7, 6-6 MEC) received a layup from Madison May with 19 seconds to play to put the visitors up 67-64.

A possession later, UVa-Wise (3-14, 2-10 MEC) Cummings would miss a 3-pointer but teammate Cynita Webb grabbed one of her career-high 16 rebounds to keep hope alive for the Cavaliers.

Cummings' second attempt would never get to the rim as May blocked the potential tying shot to seal the win.

May was lethal for the Mountain Lions as she made 8-of-13 shots en route to 18 points while adding 12 rebounds and the game-winning block.

May was just one of four Concord players to crack double-figure scoring. Lindsey Overbay and Emily Boothe came off the bench to record 14 points each.

UVa-Wise jumped out a 15-5 lead with 6:46 to play in the opening period only to see Concord close the quarter on a 9-0 run.

Concord would take its first lead of the game with 8:58 to play in the half when Emily Boothe picked off a pass and raced the length of the floor for a layup to put her team in front 16-15.

UVa-Wise responded with an 18-9 run to take a 33-25 lead to intermission.

Again, the Mountain Lions countered. This time, the visitors outscored the Cavs 26-15 in the third quarter to take a 50-49 lead to the final 10 minute session.

Concord seemingly took control of the game with a 6-0 run to make the score 62-56 with 3:40 remaining. Cummings would answer the run with a three and after an and-one by Adalmaryz Rivera – Gomez with 44 seconds to play the lead was down to one.

From there, May took over to give her team its first win over UVa-Wise in its last six tries.

Webb finished with a double-double by adding 11 points to her 16 rebounds while Rivera – Gomez also added 11.

Neither team shot well from the free throw line as UVa-Wise shot just 35.7 percent and Concord Shot 45 percent from the charity stripe.

UVa-Wise will be back in action Wednesday at West Virginia Wesleyan. Tip time is 5:30 p.m. from Buckhannon, W.Va.
