WISE - - West Virginia State used a strong fourth quarter to complete a season series sweep with an 89-79 Mountain East Conference women's basketball victory over UVa-Wise at the Prior Center Wednesday. The visiting Yellow Jackets placed four players in double figure scoring, led by Jordan Miller's 16 point showing.
West Virginia State (6-11, 6-5 MEC) broke a 65-65 tie after three quarters by dominating the offensive glass in the final 10 minutes. The Jackets grabbed six offensive rebounds in the fourth quarter and turned the second chance opportunities into eight points.
Charles Marshall's team was also lethal from the foul line in the final period as the team went a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Jasmine Davis played her best ball of the game down the stretch as she netted six of her 12 points in the final 10 minutes to propel the guests to the season-series sweep.
UVa-Wise (3-12, 2-9 MEC) fell behind 44-34 at halftime due to a poor showing in the second quarter. Elise Clyburn's team was outscored 30-14 in the second period as the Cavaliers turned the ball over six times which led to 12 of West Virginia State's 30 points.
As bad as the second quarter was, the third quarter was the opposite for UVa-Wise. The Cavs made 10-of-13 field goal attempts while going 7-for-8 from the free throw line en route to 31 third quarter points. Judy Kaylnn Cummings canned a pair of 3-pointers in the period while Kalee Johnson added five in the quarter.
A 5-0 run by the Yellow Jackets mid-way through the fourth quarter would turn a two point game to a seven point bulge as Aurreshae Hines recorded four of her 12 points in the stretch.
Cynita Webb led UVa-Wise with 15 points and six rebounds while Dakotah Turner tallied 14 points and Johnson added 13 in the loss.
UVa-Wise will be back in action Saturday when Concord University visits the Prior Center in a 2 p.m. tip.
