WISE - - UVa-Wise was unable to complete the comeback against the Yellow Jackets (9-7, 7-4 MEC) as the Cavaliers (6-11, 4-7 MEC) were edged in overtime by West Virginia State, 90-88. Sophomore point guard Michal Seals tied his season-high 26 points as he recorded his first career triple-double alongside 11 assists and a career-high 11 rebounds.
A clutch 3-pointer by redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus would send UVa-Wise and West Virginia State into overtime with the Cavs battling to the last second. In overtime, another three by senior guard Ricardo Hill would tie the game up 83-83 with 1:15 to go.
Seals would hit a three to put UVa-Wise within one point with six seconds on the clock. Free throw shots by the Yellow Jackets' Robert Fomby had the Cavs down two, but an out-of-bounds call in the last few seconds would give West Virginia State the ball back with less than a second to play in overtime.
The Cavs and Yellow Jackets would toggle the lead for most of the first half with seven lead changes and three tied scores. Seals was hot from downtown early, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc to start the game. Neither team shot particularly well from the field in the opening half, with West Virginia State going 13-for-34 (38.2 percent) from the floor and the Cavaliers hitting 13-of-36 (36.1 percent) shots from the field.
Seals led all scorers in the first half with 15 points while West Virginia State's Pat Johnson-Agwu had 10 points as the teams were knotted at 35 heading into halftime.
UVa-Wise improved shooting in the second half, going 17-for-39 (43.6 percent) from the field with the Yellow Jackets shooting 16-for-35 (45.7 percent) from the floor. The Cavaliers would lead for the majority of the second half assisted by sophomore guard Chance Sheffey's 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
Seals' two made free-throw shots with 4:24 left in regulation would tie the game up at 70-70. Back-to-back jumpers by Sheffey would tie the teams up once again before a Badmus three would send the game into overtime. The Cavs would continue to fight for the win in overtime but were ultimately outlasted by West Virginia State, 90-88.
West Virginia State's Glen Abram led the Yellow Jackets with 26 points and eight rebounds. Robert Fomby recorded a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
Seals 26 points would lead the Cavaliers while Badmus posted a double-double with 18 points and 16 rebounds. The Cavaliers finished the night shooting 33-for-84 (39.3 percent) from the field while the Yellow Jackets went 34-for-79 (43.0 percent) from the floor.
The Cavalier men will finish up their four-game home stand as they host Concord University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
