WISE - - The Cavaliers were routed by Concord University on Saturday afternoon in another tough overtime loss, 80-77, inside the David J. Prior Convocation Center. UVa-Wise (6-12, 4-8 MEC) shot 26-for-65 (40.0 percent) from the floor, but were outrebounded by the Mountain Lions 58-35.
The Cavalier men would fight to the end in a battle against the Mountain Lions (9-8, 6-6 MEC) only down one point, 74-73, with just over three minutes to play in overtime. Concord's Tommy Bolte would head to the free throw line twice with less than twenty seconds on the clock to seal the win for the Mountain Lions.
The Mountain Lions would take an early lead in the first half but sophomore point guard Michal Seals would tie it up 8-8 with 15:36 on the clock. Concord would extend its lead to seven points, 28-21, with 6:36 left to go in the first half.
UVa-Wise would go on a 7-0 run with free throw shots by redshirt senior forward Taiwo Badmus tying the game up at 28-28 at the 3:23 mark. Badmus would hit a three with just under two minutes to go in the first to give the Cavs a 33-31 lead. Seals would close out the half with a buzzer beating layup to give the Cavaliers a 37-31 advantage heading into halftime.
Seals had 17 points in the first half, going 6-for-8 from the field and 4-4 from the free throw line. Sheffey shot 50 percent from the floor in the first to get nine points. The Cavaliers shot 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) in the first half while the Mountain Lions went 10-for-28 (35.7 percent) from the field.
The Cavaliers sustained the lead for the majority of the second half, taking a 12-point advantage, 47-35, with 15:32 on the clock. Concord's Tommy Bolte cut the Cavs lead to just two, 51-49, with 9:38 to go.
A shot from downtown by sophomore guard Chance Sheffey put the Cavs up 63-59 with 4:27 left in regulation. The Mountain Lions would come back in the final seconds of the second half and tie the game up, 69-69, behind two free throws by Concord's Bolte to send the game into overtime.
Sheffey went 5-for-6 in the second with 12 points while Seals followed with seven points and two rebounds. Concord's Bolte would close out the second half with 13 points and four rebounds.
UVa-Wise hit 11-of-25 shots (44 percent) from the floor in the second while Concord made just 11-for-31 (35.5 percent) from the field.
In overtime, the Mountain Lions' Trey Brisco made a quick bucket to give Concord a two-point advantage, 71-69, with 4:18 on the clock. Sophomore forward Yesid Mosquera-Perea would get the game within one for the Cavs, 72-71, with 3:21 to go.
The Mountain Lions would extend their lead to three points, 76-73, with less than two minutes to go. Seals would get the game within three once again, 78-75, with 11 seconds on the clock, but the Cavs would send Bolte back to the line in the final seconds to give Concord the 80-77 win in overtime.
Concord finished the game going 24-for-67 (35.8 percent) from the floor, 9-for-31 (29 percent) from beyond the arc.
Seals recorded a season-high 30 points along with five assists while Sheffey had 21 points and four assits on the night. Badmus posted a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Next up, UVa-Wise will hit the road for a matchup against the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
