DUE WEST, S.C. – Cavalier Volleyball was unable to come away with a win on day one of the Fleet Classic. The Cavs dropped their matches to Erskine College, 3-1 (25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 26-24), and Shorter University, 3-1 (25-16, 17-25, 28-26, 25-11) Friday afternoon.
UVa-Wise matched up against host institution Erskine College in the first game of the afternoon. The Cavs recorded nine blocks and 38 assists but were held to just 13 points in the first set. The Flying Fleet ended the set on an 8-0 run with a 25-13 win over the Cavaliers. Erskine won the second set, 25-20, before the Cavs rallied to win the third set. Behind sophomore Briana Kerr's five digs, UVa-Wise ended the third set scoring four unanswered points and earned a 25-21 victory over the Flying Fleet. Despite the late rally, the Cavaliers were upset by Erskine, 26-24, in the fourth set.
Junior Ciara Kain registered 13 kills and 11 digs against Erskine while freshman Makayla Ledford posted a double-double with 31 assists and 13 digs for the Cavs. Kerr led UVa-Wise in digs as she tallied 18 in the match.
In the second game of the day, UVa-Wise fell to Shorter University, 3-1. The Cavs dropped the first set to Shorter University, 25-16, but were able to bounce back to a 25-17 win over the Hawks in the second set of the match. UVa-Wise continued to battle into the third set, but fell short with the Hawks claiming a close 28-26 victory over the Cavaliers. The Cavs were held to just 11 points in the final set of the match.
UVa-Wise was led once again in kills by Kain who recorded 13 against the Hawks. Ledford ended the match with 32 assists while Kerr registered 16 digs for the Cavaliers.
The Cavs will be back in action tomorrow as they face King University at 2:30 p.m.
